After a decade on ETC, Nahta heads Zee’s movie business

Zee restructures its film vertical and hands acquisition, commercial oversight and the Zee Studios team to trade veteran Komal Nahta.

Zee puts its movie bets in Nahta's hands

Zee Entertainment Enterprises has redrawn the leadership of its film business. The company named trade veteran Komal Nahta as Creative Director for the Movies Business, placing the Zee Studios team and its movie acquisition decisions under one executive.

Under the new structure, Suraj Singh and the Zee Studios team will report into Nahta. Nahta, in turn, reports directly to Chief Executive Officer Punit Goenka and will oversee commercial and acquisition decisions across platforms, with a focus on Hindi and other language films.

The trade voice moves to the buyer’s chair

Nahta’s appointment is notable because of where he has spent his career: on the editorial and commentary side of the trade. He has hosted Zee’s ETC channel’s Bollywood Business show for a decade, watching the industry as an analyst rather than a studio executive. The new role places him on the other side of the negotiation table.

That shift is exactly what Zee appears to want. Goenka said the restructuring was meant to combine “creative conviction and commercial discipline” to improve returns on movie investments across platforms. The phrase captures the core tension of the movie business: buying films is partly taste and partly arithmetic, and Zee is asking one leader to own both.

What changes

  • The Zee Studios team now reports into Nahta rather than operating as a separate island.
  • Commercial and movie acquisition decisions sit under a single Creative Director.
  • The remit covers Hindi and other language films across Zee’s platforms.
  • Nahta reports directly to CEO Punit Goenka.

For producers and sellers, this is a practical change: the person who used to evaluate the business from the outside will now help decide what Zee buys and at what price. For Zee, it is a bet that a career spent reading the market can translate into sharper buying.

Why it matters

Hindi cinema’s acquisition market has become more selective, with platforms and studios scrutinising cost against actual viewership. Consolidating creative and commercial authority is a common efficiency move, but the choice of executive matters. Nahta brings relationships across production, distribution and exhibition, and a decade-long familiarity with Zee’s own ecosystem.

The move also clarifies internal hierarchy. By having a single executive own both studio output and acquisition strategy, Zee removes the split between those who make films and those who buy them. That should reduce friction when a title has to be priced, windowed or placed on a platform.

Nahta called the appointment “a homecoming of sorts”, citing his long association with ETC. The question now is whether his observer’s knowledge converts into a buyer’s instinct once the deals are his to make.
