Udta Teer opened with an official India nett of ₹4.10 crore on Friday, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, after a morning that had pointed to a much lower number.
The spy comedy, led by Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, was tracking in the ₹2.50 crore range on early shows. Evening and night screenings then picked up sharply in urban centres, lifting the day’s total.
The Day 1 number
Taran Adarsh reported that the film “fares better than pre-release estimates”, with the final figure at ₹4.10 crore official nett BOC for India business. The gap between the early trajectory and the closing number matters because it changes the opening narrative from soft to workable.
What the opening tells us
- Urban centres led the recovery: the late pickup was strong enough to be called out in the trade’s reading.
- Evening and night shows changed the day: a ₹2.50 crore trajectory became a ₹4 crore-plus result.
- The weekend is now the test: Saturday and Sunday holds will decide whether this is a stable run.
For a mid-budget film positioned as a family-friendly spy comedy, a ₹4 crore-plus Friday is a respectable base, not a breakout. It gives the film room to grow if word of mouth works.
Why the genre matters
Ayushmann Khurrana described the film as a “pro-India patriotic comedy” in which he plays a Pakistani spy who loses his memory and ends up supporting India. The premise is deliberately broad, and the ensemble—Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Raghubir Yadav, Supriya Pilgaonkar and others—reinforces a family draw.
The film marks Akash A Kaushik’s directorial debut and is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, a continuation of the Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment partnership.
The late pickup is a useful reminder that morning samples can understate a film’s actual audience. Urban moviegoers often decide late, and a Hindi film that holds them into the night has a different trajectory from one that front-loads and fades.
The weekend will tell whether the evening support was a one-day bounce or a genuine hold. For now, the Day 1 figure clears the early-estimate bar.
