Jailer 2 posts biggest Tamil Monday, tops ₹242 crore in 5 days

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 collects ₹42.35 crore on first Monday, taking five-day India net to ₹242.25 crore and setting a Tamil box-office record.

Jailer 2 crosses ₹242 crore with a record Monday

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has turned its first Monday into a record. On day five, the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel added ₹42.35 crore net in India, pushing its domestic total to ₹242.25 crore, according to Sacnilk figures carried by Hindustan Times.

The number makes the film the biggest first-Monday earner in Tamil cinema history, and it is already the highest-grossing Tamil release of 2026. Across India, the film played 14,976 shows on Monday with 48.8 percent occupancy.

A five-day run in numbers

  • Opening day, October 15: ₹59.70 crore
  • Friday: ₹37.10 crore
  • Saturday: ₹47.25 crore
  • Sunday: ₹55.85 crore
  • First Monday: ₹42.35 crore
  • Five-day India net: ₹242.25 crore

The language-wise trend is instructive. The Tamil version remains the engine, contributing ₹31.40 crore on Monday and ₹174.20 crore over five days. The film is performing better in Tamil than in Telugu and Hindi, which matters for exhibitors deciding how many shows to allocate in the North Indian market.

The sequel brings back Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik from the 2023 original, and adds SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff reprise their cameos.

Why the Monday matters

Box-office holds are the more reliable health check for a blockbuster. A strong opening can be bought with screens and advance bookings; a strong Monday shows that audiences outside the first wave are still turning up. On that measure, Jailer 2 is healthy.

The film had two structural advantages. It opened into the Navaratri and Dasara corridor, giving weekday audiences room to watch, and it faced no direct competition in the Tamil market. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the sequel continues the story of retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian.

What to watch next

The question now is whether the film can hold through the remaining weekdays and convert the holiday momentum into a strong second weekend. Director Nelson Dilipkumar thanked audiences on social media, writing, “Theatres are going bonkers! Thalaivar magic hits different.”

For Hindi cinema watchers, Jailer 2 is a reminder of where the southern box-office calendar is setting the pace. The Hindi version is not the main driver, but the all-India number is large enough to matter for release planning. Watch the Tamil total as the core indicator, and do not read a modest Hindi run as a sign of weakness. The record Monday is an opening statement, not a final total.
