Amit Sadh is treating his November 20 release Pratap as a reset: his first genuine theatrical outing in eight years. The distinction, he says, matters more than the paperwork.
A release on paper is not a release in practice
Speaking with Bollywood Hungama during the film’s promotions, Sadh admitted he no longer remembers his release-day routine, because “it’s been many years since my film has released theatrically.” His last major big-screen role, by his count, was Gold in 2018.
That count leaves out Pune Highway, which had a cinema date in 2025. Sadh was blunt about why. He called it “a token release to put it on OTT” and said the release felt forced. In his telling, a streaming platform can require a theatrical window before it agrees to buy a film, and that changes the meaning of the run.
“I was very disappointed by the manner in which Pune Highway was released,” Sadh said.
Why the token window is worth watching
The comment names a practice that is now common enough to shape how audiences should read a film’s distribution plan. A cinema listing can be a genuine exhibition strategy, or it can be a compliance step on the way to a streaming premiere. For an actor, the difference is the size of the release and the intent behind it.
Sadh was careful not to complain about his digital years. He pointed to titles such as Breathe, Avrodh and Jeet Ki Zid as good work. But he said Pratap is the next big theatrical release after Gold, with Super 30 in 2019 falling into the brief-appearance category.
The test is November 20
Sadh said Pratap is getting “a good theatrical release,” thanked his producer, and said the team is working to bring audiences to cinemas. The practical question for viewers is simple: if a film is presented as a proper theatrical event, the opening weekend is where that claim is tested.
- Pratap opens in cinemas on November 20. Sadh says the release is a proper one.
- His last major theatrical release was Gold in 2018. Super 30 was a brief appearance.
- Pune Highway was a token release. Sadh says an OTT platform’s conditions made it feel forced.
For audiences who follow Hindi cinema closely, the useful framework is to ask what a release is for: filling cinemas, or meeting a contract.
