Ed Sheeran’s first Hindi film song did not begin with a formal deal or a carefully scheduled studio block. It began with a direct request from Shah Rukh Khan, and Sheeran has said he recorded his verse on the same night he was introduced to the film’s composers.
The song is “Tu Mil Jaaye,” from Shah Rukh’s upcoming action drama King. Released on November 2 to coincide with Shah Rukh’s birthday, it pairs Sheeran with Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi. Sachin-Jigar composed the music and Kumaar wrote the lyrics.
From a favour to a recording session
During an earlier India visit, Sheeran and Arijit Singh had gone to Shah Rukh’s home to ask him to appear in the video for “Sapphire,” Sheeran’s song with Arijit. That visit created a reciprocal opening. On a later visit, Sheeran says, Shah Rukh returned the favour by introducing him to Sachin-Jigar.
Sheeran wrote on Instagram that Shah Rukh told him he “must make a song to be in his next movie” and make it his first Bollywood song. He added that he “wrote and recorded my verse … that night” after being introduced to the composers.
Shah Rukh reshared the behind-the-scenes video and thanked Sheeran for the track, “especially the Hindi bits.” That is not incidental: Sheeran has built his career primarily in English-language pop, so the Hindi vocal is the actual step into Indian film music.
Why it matters
- Vocals: Ed Sheeran, Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi.
- Music and lyrics: Sachin-Jigar, with lyrics by Kumaar.
- Release timing: November 2, Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday.
- Film release: King, directed by Siddharth Anand, opens December 24, 2026.
The speed of the collaboration is the real story. What began as a conversation between two stars became a recording session within hours. For Hindi cinema, where a song can shape a film’s campaign before the trailer, this shows that access and trust can matter as much as a formal plan.
The track also links two moments in Sheeran’s India story: the earlier “Sapphire” with Arijit, and now a full Hindi film song. The video pairs Shah Rukh with Deepika Padukone, whose screen history includes Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan and Jawan. That gives the song a romantic dimension in King‘s campaign.
What to watch
King carries a wide cast: Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Abhay Verma, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal. Sheeran’s presence adds an international angle without turning the film into a crossover project. The next signal is how “Tu Mil Jaaye” is used inside the film, and whether its social-media momentum carries into the December opening.
