Luis Mandoki directed Trapped, a 2002 crime thriller starring Charlize Theron, Courtney Love, Stuart Townsend, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Fanning, and Pruitt Taylor Vince. It depicts an affluent Portland, Oregon couple whose daughter is kidnapped by a strange guy and his wife who want a ransom for unknown reasons, based on Greg Iles’ bestselling novel 24 Hours.

Trapped was released in theatres on September 20, 2002, after being shot in British Columbia in the spring of 2001. It earned mostly negative reviews from critics and was a box office disaster, grossing only $13.4 million against a $30 million budget.

When Will (Stuart Townsend) and Karen (Charlize Theron) Jennings are kidnapped and held hostage, a ruthless plot is set in action that will put all they thought they knew to the test. Joe (Kevin Bacon) and Cheryl (Courtney Love) Hickey have devised a failsafe scheme to extort money from wealthy families with the help of their cousin Marvin (Pruitt Taylor Vince). Will and Karen are pushed to the edge to save their daughter as the scheme escalates and unravels.

Trapped, previously named 24 Hours, began principal photography on March 19, 2001, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and ended on June 13, 2001. Between May 22 and June 5, the film’s climax motorway action was shot on Highway 19 at the Courtenay/Cumberland intersection at Buckley Bay.

On September 20, 2002, the film Trapped was released in 2,227 cinemas across the United States. The picture grossed $3,210,765 in its first weekend. It stayed in theatres for a total of 103 days in the United States, grossing $7,073,251. It made an additional $6,341,165 in international markets, bringing the total gross to $13,414,416.
