Sanjay Gupta's last rites: Bollywood gathers at Versova crematorium

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta was cremated at Mumbai’s Versova crematorium on Saturday, a day after he died from a head injury sustained in a fall at his residence. His death on October 30 brought a wide cross-section of Hindi cinema to the crematorium, reflecting the relationships he built over decades.

A fraternity farewell

Abhishek Bachchan, Rajpal Yadav, Rakesh Roshan, Rajat Bedi and Harshvardhan Rane were among those present for the last rites. Rakesh Roshan, who had earlier visited the Gupta residence, was one of the first to arrive. Rohit Roy and Ronit Roy also went to the family’s home; Ronit Roy was visibly emotional. Milap Zaveri and Ashoke Pandit were among the other industry members who visited the family.

Ashoke Pandit confirmed Gupta’s death on X, calling him a talented director, an engaging storyteller and a generous, energetic personality.

The films that built his name

Gupta was best known for Aatish, Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Shootout at Wadala. He built a distinct place in mainstream Hindi cinema through ensemble-driven Mumbai crime stories, stylised action and dialogue-led set pieces. For readers who follow Hindi cinema closely, that filmography is part of the record: Kaante was an ambitious Hindi heist film with a large cast, and the two Shootout films turned real city crime into a commercial franchise.

  • Sanjay Gupta died on October 30 after falling in his kitchen the previous night.
  • His last rites at Versova drew Abhishek Bachchan, Rakesh Roshan, Rajpal Yadav and others.
  • Sanjay Dutt has pledged to bring Kaante 2 to the screen as a tribute.
  • Milap Zaveri says he will dedicate his next film to Gupta, his mentor.

A sequel becomes a promise

Sanjay Dutt, a longtime friend and collaborator, remembered Gupta as family and said they had spoken recently about Kaante 2. He said he would “do everything possible to fulfil Gupta’s dream” of making the sequel. That turns an unmade project into an announced act of remembrance, and adds expectation around a title that has been discussed in the industry for years.

Milap Zaveri’s remembrance was equally personal. He described Gupta as a mentor, brother, friend and guiding force, and said Gupta had given him his first major professional opportunity when he was 21. Zaveri met Gupta about ten days before his death and shared the title of his next film; Gupta responded enthusiastically, noting that his father had produced an earlier film with the same title. Zaveri said he would dedicate the new project to Gupta.

What to watch for

The immediate question for audiences is whether Kaante 2 can move forward without its original director. Dutt’s public pledge signals intent, but production, script and casting have not been confirmed. For now, the industry’s response is less about business and more about a filmmaker’s relationships.
