Regal Cinema, originally Regal Entertainment Group, is a movie theatre chain based in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. Regal, a Cineworld division, operates the United States’ second-largest theatre circuit, with approximately 7,200 screens in 549 locations as of October 2019. Regal Entertainment Group’s three main theatre brands are Regal Cinemas, Edwards Theatres, and United Artists Theatres.
These businesses keep their external signage, but the Regal Entertainment Group name and logo are used for most indoor branding. The Regal Cinemas name is used on the majority of new theatre buildings. Since the merger, Regal has bought other smaller businesses, which have been renamed Regal Cinemas.
The British theatre company Cineworld announced on December 5, 2017, that it would acquire Regal for $3.6 billion, making it the world’s second-largest cinema exhibitor behind AMC.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Regal Cinemas closed all 543 of its theatres in the United States indefinitely on March 16, 2020, becoming the first theatre chain in the United States to do so. The Arclight Sherman Oaks was leased to Regal Cinemas on June 19, 2021. Regal also announced plans to renovate the theatre, spending $10 million to add Regal RPX, ScreenX, and 4DX. The theatre reopened as part of the cinema franchise in July 2021.
