Ramayana crosses ₹81 crore in two days but trails Adipurush

Ramayana crossed ₹81 crore net in India by 3 pm on day two after a record working Thursday. The Diwali weekend will decide if it can catch Adipurush.

Ramayana crosses ₹81 crore in two days; weekend is the test

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana started with a record-breaking working Thursday and then eased into a slower Friday. By 3 PM on day two, the film had added ₹16.88 crore net in India, taking its two-day haul past ₹81 crore, according to figures reported by Hindustan Times.

Day one remains the headline. The ₹64.85 crore net opening is the fourth-highest first-day collection in Hindi cinema history, ahead of Pathaan (₹57 crore), Animal (₹63 crore) and Drishyam 2 (₹62 crore). It missed the all-time day-one record held by Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 at ₹102 crore, and also fell short of Adipurush at ₹86.75 crore.

Why the Friday drop needs context

The slowdown does not amount to a verdict. Ramayana opened on a working Thursday, November 5, ahead of Diwali, and its second day is another working Friday. The film has already set a new record for a pre-Diwali release in India, but that also means its first two days are not a like-for-like comparison with Adipurush. The older film’s first two days were a Friday and a Saturday, and it reached ₹151 crore by the end of that period.

A useful way to read the early numbers:

  • Day one: ₹64.85 crore net India — fourth-highest Hindi opening.
  • Day two by 3 PM: ₹16.88 crore; two-day total over ₹81 crore.
  • Adipurush comparison: ₹151 crore after two days, but with a weekend start.
  • Kannada version: ₹7.50 crore on day one, slow despite Yash’s presence.

Where the collections are coming from

The Hindi version is carrying the film. Telugu has also fared acceptably, while Malayalam and Tamil are adding little. The Kannada version is the most visible problem: Yash’s presence as Ravana has not yet converted into a strong opening in Karnataka. Positive reviews and audience word of mouth are the only near-term levers before the weekend.

What to watch next

The real test is Saturday and Sunday. If the film holds better than its Friday morning pace, the pre-Diwali record will look like a launchpad rather than a ceiling. If it does not, the Adipurush comparison will persist even though the calendar was different.

Ramayana is planned as a two-part saga, produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash plays Ravana, and Ravie Dubey plays Lakshman. The second film is scheduled for Diwali 2028.
