Ramayana opens at Rs 72 crore, but the real test begins now

Early estimates put Ramayana's Hindi first-day at Rs 72 crore, a pre-Diwali record, but a Rs 1,000-crore first instalment leaves little room for error.

Ramayana's Rs 72 crore opening is a record and a test

Hindi cinema’s most expensive gamble has opened with a record and a warning. Early estimates put Ramayana’s first-day Hindi collection at around Rs 72 crore, making it the biggest pre-Diwali opening for a Hindi film. That is the headline. The fine print is that a film made for roughly Rs 1,000 crore needs more than a strong first day. A strong Diwali start matters, but it is a checkpoint, not a conclusion.

Trade estimates had expected an opening nearer Rs 80 crore. The film also trails Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which crossed Rs 100 crore on day one. A four-day opening period is projected at around Rs 210 crore, with a further pick-up likely after the festive window.

A record opening, not a verdict

Ramayana’s first-day number passes the previous high-water marks in the pre-Diwali slot: Thugs of Hindostan at Rs 50.75 crore, Happy New Year at Rs 44.97 crore, and Tiger 3 at Rs 44 crore. The record is real. But for a two-part franchise reported to carry a combined budget of Rs 4,000 crore, the opening weekend is only the first gate.

The first instalment alone is estimated at around Rs 1,000 crore. Sustainability after the holiday rush is where the economics will be decided. A front-loaded event film can set records and still fall short of its investment if weekday and second-week collections taper sharply.

Why exhibition stocks are watching

PVR INOX is counting on Ramayana as a major driver of its December-quarter business. Elara Capital’s estimates put five releases — Jailer 2, Drishyam 3, Ramayana, King and Avengers: Doomsday — at roughly Rs 980 crore of contribution to the multiplex chain’s Q3 FY27 box office.

  • Ramayana and Avengers: Doomsday alone are estimated at 62% of that contribution, or nearly Rs 610 crore for PVR INOX.
  • Ramayana’s domestic net collection is estimated at Rs 800 crore and Avengers at Rs 600 crore.
  • That math uses PVR INOX’s recent investor-update shares of 38% for Hindi and 51% for English films.

The chain has already seen occupancy strengthen: from 23% in FY25 to 26.2% in FY26, and 30.4% in Q2 FY27. For Q3, it expects 28-29% or higher. Third-quarter ticket sales revenue is estimated at Rs 1,130 crore, up 12% year on year.

If Ramayana holds, it gives PVR INOX a cushion if other releases underperform. If it drops sharply after the Diwali period, that cushion disappears.

The number that matters now

For the Hindi film trade, the next checkpoint is not the opening-day record but the weekday trend after the festive period. There is a difference between a record and a recovery. The film has the first. The second is still being earned.
