Ramayana Opens at Rs 127 Crore, 14th Biggest Global Start

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana grosses about Rs 127 crore worldwide on day one, taking the 14th-biggest global opening ever despite a weak pre-Diwali date.

Ramayana: Rs 127 cr Day One, 14th Biggest Global Start

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, led by Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, has opened at the worldwide box office with a reported first-day gross of around Rs 127 crore. Trade estimates published by Pinkvilla place the film at 14th on the all-time list of global opening days.

The split was led by domestic audiences: India contributed roughly Rs 76 crore gross, while overseas territories added about Rs 53 crore. The film arrived in the pre-Diwali corridor, a period exhibitors and distributors routinely treat as one of the weakest release windows in the Hindi film calendar.

The rank in context

An all-time top 15 opening is notable for any Hindi film, but the company the film keeps is revealing. Pinkvilla reports that the list is heavily dominated by South Indian productions; only three Bollywood titles appear in the top 15: Dhurandhar 2, Jawan, and now Ramayana. The top spot remains with Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 at Rs 257 crore, followed by Baahubali 2 and Dhurandhar 2 in the upper reaches.

  • Day-one worldwide gross: around Rs 127 crore
  • India gross: around Rs 76 crore
  • Overseas gross: around Rs 53 crore
  • All-time rank: 14th-biggest global opening day

Why the date matters

The opening looks more significant because of when it took place. The days before Diwali are traditionally a slow corridor: families are in preparation mode, travel often wins over moviegoing, and advance bookings can be softer than on holiday weekends. Pinkvilla notes that, had Ramayana been released outside this period, it would likely have opened considerably higher.

That context changes how the Rs 127 crore figure should be read. Instead of a ceiling, the 14th-biggest global opening may be a floor for a film whose holiday holds and word of mouth will be tested over the next week.

What it means for Hindi cinema

For Bollywood, the list is a structural reminder, not a one-film story. Even a major mythological adaptation with a big Bollywood star needed a suboptimal date to enter an all-time opening list that South Indian franchises have largely set the terms for. The next test is whether Ramayana can convert its pre-Diwali start into a sustained run once the holiday begins.
