Hindi cinema’s event slate is increasingly built on a simple proposition: take a star familiar to one audience, pair them with a star familiar to another, and let the combination do the work. Five forthcoming films make that logic explicit, spanning mythological epic, post-apocalyptic thriller and action-crime drama.
The five pairings at a glance
- Dragon — Sidhant Gupta joins Jr NTR in Prashanth Neel’s Telugu production; release planned for June 11, 2027.
- Ramayana: Part One — Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi play Ram and Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation, due November 5, 2026.
- Pralay — Ranveer Singh and Kalyani Priyadarshan lead Jai Mehta’s Mumbai-set survival thriller; filming began in August 2026.
- Spirit — Prabhas and Triptii Dimri star in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s crime drama, moved to October 29, 2027 for Diwali.
- Varanasi — Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas appear in SS Rajamouli’s action-adventure, set for April 7, 2027.
First-time combinations are the point
In Dragon, Sidhant Gupta steps into a large-scale Telugu production as Boby Sarkar, shown in the film’s promotional glimpse as Jr NTR’s brother and the Wazir of the Afghan Trading Company. Gupta arrives after Jubilee, Freedom at Midnight and Black Warrant, while Jr NTR works with Prashanth Neel of KGF and Salaar for the first time.
Ramayana: Part One surrounds its central pairing with Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, produced by Namit Malhotra. Spirit, meanwhile, casts Prabhas as a police officer opposite Triptii Dimri, who has built attention through Bulbbul, Qala and Animal; Vivek Oberoi also appears in an important role.
Why the mix matters
The castings are not merely novelty. Ramayana combines Ranbir Kapoor’s Hindi cinema draw with Sai Pallavi’s following across Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films. Varanasi pairs Mahesh Babu’s Telugu stardom with Priyanka Chopra Jonas, marking her return to a major Indian theatrical production, with Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha. Pralay gives Kalyani Priyadarshan a Hindi entry after her work in Malayalam and Tamil films including Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra.
For Hindi cinema audiences, the significance is calendar as much as casting. These titles formalise a shift in which “Hindi film” and “South film” are increasingly distribution labels rather than creative boundaries.
What to track
The clearest test arrives first: Ramayana: Part One opens worldwide on November 5, 2026. Varanasi follows on April 7, 2027, Dragon on June 11, 2027, and Spirit on October 29, 2027 after moving from its earlier March 2027 slot. Pralay has no announced date yet but has begun filming in Mumbai.
