Mohra Returns in 4K to Face Ramayana This Diwali

The 1994 action hit Mohra returns to cinemas on November 6 in 4K, setting up a Diwali-week test against Ramayana and the wider re-release market.

Mohra Returns in 4K to Face Ramayana This Diwali

Bollywood’s theatrical re-release market is about to face another test. Mohra, the 1994 action blockbuster starring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon, is returning to cinemas on 6 November in a 4K remaster, putting it directly alongside the new Ramayana led by Ranbir Kapoor during Diwali week.

Trimurti Films Pvt Ltd, the original producer, confirmed the reissue through its YouTube channel. Rimpy Films International is handling the return and has been sharing updates on its social media pages. The distributor also re-released Rajiv Rai’s Zora this week, according to the report.

One Agra theatre goes all in

Heera Talkies in Agra has made a pointed programming choice. The single-screen cinema will run Mohra in all four daily shows and will not screen Ramayana. One hall does not set the national pattern, but the decision shows how an exhibitor can lean on a familiar catalogue title when a major new release is competing for screens.

The re-release market, in context

Theatrical reissues gained momentum in 2024 with Rockstar, Laila Majnu and Tumbbad. In 2025, Sanam Teri Kasam reportedly collected more than ₹40 crore after returning to cinemas, which the report describes as the largest re-release success at that point. The trend has cooled since, even though Avengers Endgame: Encore did encouraging business last month.

For exhibitors, the appeal of a reissue is practical: a known title arrives with built-in awareness and can be programmed around other releases. Results still vary with screen availability, show counts and the competition in the same window.

Rimpy Films International has also indicated that other Trimurti titles will follow:

  • Vidhaata (1982)
  • Tridev (1989)
  • Gupt (1994)
  • Yudh (1985)

Why Mohra can still draw a crowd

The original opened on 1 July 1994 with a cast that included Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal and Gulshan Grover. It became a blockbuster on the strength of mass-appeal performances and Viju Shah’s score. Songs such as Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast and Tip Tip Barsa Paani remain cultural touchstones.

The 4K presentation offers older viewers a big-screen revisit while introducing younger audiences to a film they missed in its first run.

What will decide the Diwali contest

The clash with Ramayana will hinge on how screens and showtimes are allocated, how strongly audiences turn out for each film, and whether Mohra’s music and nostalgia can convert into ticket sales. For the trade, this is a live measure of both the promise and the limits of scheduling catalogue titles against an event film.
