Aamir Khan has given the clearest sign yet that a 3 Idiots sequel is moving from idea to final screenplay. At the Singapore International Film Festival, where he received the Screen Icon Award, the actor said Rajkumar Hirani is writing the script and is expected to narrate the final version to him in the coming weeks.
What he said in Singapore
Aamir checked with Hirani before disclosing the update. He then kept the announcement deliberately small: “Raju is working on the script. In fact, hopefully once I’m back in the next couple of weeks, he’s going to narrate the final version to me. So, fingers crossed.”
The confirmation keeps the sequel in the writing stage. No shooting schedule, additional cast, or release date has been announced.
How the sequel was first described
The project first entered public conversation in April this year. In an interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir had said he had heard the story and called it wonderful, while cautioning that the screenplay needed further work. He described the premise as unusual, carrying the same humour as the first film and following the characters ten years later.
- Original release: 3 Idiots arrived in 2009 with Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani.
- Sequel premise: The same characters, a decade later, with the original’s comic tone.
- Current status: Script to be narrated in the coming weeks; no production or release date yet.
Why the update matters
For fans, the news is modest but real: a follow-up is not merely being discussed; it is being written. Aamir has already said he expects to return as Phunsukh Wangdu, the identity adopted by Rancho at the end of the original film.
The absence of a production date is also instructive. Reports have speculated that filming could begin around April 2027 once Aamir completes other commitments, but those plans remain unofficial. Until the final script is narrated and approved, the project stays in development.
The context for a sequel
Hirani’s method is to let the screenplay lead. The original film became a reference point for Hindi cinema’s campus comedy, and a decade-later follow-up gives the filmmakers room to age the characters without discarding what worked. For Bollywood Chronicle readers, the next meaningful milestone is not a trailer or a date—it is whether Hirani’s final narration clears the bar Aamir has set.
