Vidya Balan is reported to be in talks to join Saif Ali Khan in Ritesh Batra’s next feature, after Priyanka Chopra stepped away from the project. Filming has already begun in Mumbai, with Saif reported to have started work on the film, and the makers have not yet confirmed the casting change.
Mid-Day reported the development. Until the actors or the production house confirm it, the switch should be read as a strong trade possibility rather than a signed agreement.
The reported switch
The untitled project is described as a romantic drama set around a family. Priyanka Chopra had earlier been linked to the film; reports now place Vidya Balan as the front-runner for the central role. The title, supporting cast and release timeline remain undisclosed.
Why the pairing matters
If the casting is confirmed, it returns Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan to the same frame nearly two decades after their last film together. They first appeared in Parineeta (2005), Pradeep Sarkar’s romantic drama that marked Vidya’s Hindi film debut, and then in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007).
Vidya’s filmography rests heavily on dialogue and emotional texture, while Saif’s later work has moved toward dramatic roles. A Batra film tends to depend on intimate exchanges rather than scale, so the pairing would be asked to carry the narrative through quieter moments. That is a different register from a conventional star vehicle, and it may be precisely why the potential coupling is drawing attention.
The director’s lens
The feature would be Saif’s first with Batra. Batra came to international attention with The Lunchbox (2013), and his Photograph (2019) also built on an unlikely connection between two people from different worlds in Mumbai. An untitled family romance in the same city sits close to the filmmaker’s established territory.
