Tiger Shroff’s real name is Jai Hemant; nickname came from bites

Tiger Shroff was born Jai Hemant Shroff. The screen name that anchors his action career began as a childhood habit of biting people, including a teacher.

Tiger Shroff's real name is Jai Hemant; nickname began with a bite

Before the action franchises and the high-octane screen persona, Tiger Shroff was simply Jai Hemant Shroff. The story behind the change resurfaced this week after a firing incident in Mumbai’s Juhu area, but it is rooted in a childhood habit that predates any film.

How Jai Hemant became Tiger

Tiger was born on March 2, 1990, to Jackie Shroff and Ayesha Shroff. His birth name was not chosen at random. His father was born Jai Kishen before films turned him into Jackie, and his uncle was named Hemant. The family combined the two to arrive at Jai Hemant.

The nickname arrived from a less formal source. In a May 2014 Hindustan Times interview, Tiger recalled that he used to bite people as a child and that the habit followed him to school.

“I used to bite as a kid … like bite everyone around,” he said. “I bit my teacher in school and even got punished for that.”

He returned to the story in 2024 on Curly Tales while promoting Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with Akshay Kumar. “I used to bite people when I was a kid, and that is pretty much how I got my name,” he said. Kumar’s offhand response was simply, “That’s amazing.”

Tiger has called the biting his way of showing affection in greeting people. The name stuck among family and friends, and he eventually adopted it officially in films, replacing Jai Hemant on screen.

  • Birth name: Jai Hemant Shroff, born March 2, 1990.
  • Nickname source: a childhood habit of biting people, including a teacher.
  • Family naming: father Jackie was born Jai Kishen; uncle Hemant completed the birth name.
  • Screen identity: Tiger Shroff adopted the nickname officially in films.

Why the story resurfaced now

The name origin has drawn fresh attention after an October 18 firing in Mumbai’s Juhu area. Tiger was reportedly in a vehicle near Pushpa Park when unidentified assailants opened fire. He escaped without a reported gunshot injury, while his driver was injured and taken to hospital.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the actor at his residence and said Tiger had injuries on his left hand from gunpowder and glass shards, adding that both Tiger and his mother were shaken. Mumbai Police have formed 15 teams to investigate, and reports have linked alleged claims of responsibility to people said to be associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Three people were detained or arrested in Kota, Rajasthan, with the matter transferred to Mumbai authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and the claims have not been established in court.

The record behind the name

For Hindi cinema readers, this is another small entry in the industry’s long record of screen names that became larger than birth names. Jackie Shroff’s journey from Jai Kishen to Jackie is only one generation earlier. Tiger’s chosen name is now inseparable from the physically demanding action films that made him a star, and the story behind it is a reminder that some of the most marketable identities in Bollywood begin off-camera and in childhood.
