Sidhant Gupta exits Aamir Khan's Lalkaara

Sidhant Gupta has exited Lalkaara, the period feature that was to pair him with Aamir Khan under director Ashutosh Gowariker, before the film has even received a formal announcement. The departure, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter India, comes down to scheduling rather than creative differences.

Industry sources told the trade that the film’s “evolving production timelines began to overlap” with commitments Gupta had already made. After discussions with the team, the sources said, the actor chose to step away rather than disrupt work that was already under way.

A reunion with historical weight

The project matters to Hindi cinema because it reunites Khan and Gowariker 25 years after Lagaan, the 2001 Oscar-nominated drama. Lalkaara is conceived as an emotional sports drama set against the 1947 Partition, and substantial pre-production and physical preparation are already in progress. No official filming schedule has been confirmed.

According to the report, Khan is expected to play Lala Amarnath, a founding figure of modern Indian cricket. The narrative is reportedly anchored in the 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, the first bilateral series between the two countries, and would explore rivalry, cross-border friendship and national pride in the post-Independence years.

Full slates on both sides

The exit reflects how packed Indian film calendars have become. Gupta, acclaimed for Jubilee, has several commitments already in place. A quick look at the schedules shows why a moving production window can force hard choices:

  • Lalkaara: In pre-production; expected to go on floors shortly, with no confirmed timeline.
  • Sidhant Gupta: Next leading Roy Kapur Films’ Teen Kauwe; also attached to Prashanth Neel’s feature.
  • Aamir Khan: Expected to complete Lalkaara, then move into 3 Idiots 2 with R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Rajkumar Hirani.

For now, the casting change has not altered the central promise of Lalkaara: a Khan-Gowariker reunion around a defining chapter of subcontinental cricket. But it does underline that a film’s schedule can move even before its title is officially public.
