Why footfalls cut through ticket-price inflation
Collections are a useful scoreboard, but they are also a product of ticket rates. A film released in a higher-priced exhibition market can post bigger week-one collections than an older blockbuster simply because entry costs more. First-week footfalls count admissions. They answer a simpler question: how many tickets did the film actually sell in its opening week, regardless of what each ticket cost.
For Hindi cinema, that makes footfalls especially important for retrospectives and star comparisons. A collection record set in 2015 and one set in 2024 are not measuring the same thing. Footfalls get closer to comparing like with like.
The top ten in first-week admissions
- Baahubali 2: The Conclusion — 2.45 crore
- Sultan — 2.19 crore
- Bajrangi Bhaijaan — 2.01 crore
- Tiger Zinda Hai — 1.93 crore
- Dangal — 1.92 crore
- Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) — 1.91 crore
- Dhoom 3 — 1.90 crore
- Dhurandhar 2 — 1.89 crore
- Gadar 2 — 1.85 crore
- PK — 1.84 crore
These are admissions in the Hindi market, so the list mixes films from different release windows and points in the multiplex boom. What remains constant is the unit being counted: a single ticket-holder walking in during the first seven days.
Baahubali 2’s lead is the standout data point. At 2.45 crore first-week admissions, it sits 0.26 crore ahead of Sultan and is the only title to clear 2.4 crore. The gap from fourth to tenth is much tighter: less than 0.1 crore separates Tiger Zinda Hai from PK, which means the bottom half of the table is not a story of dominance but of fine margins.
What the rankings say about star power
Salman Khan is the list’s most repeated star in the upper reaches. Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan occupy second and third, both above the 2 crore line, while Tiger Zinda Hai sits fourth. Aamir Khan matches him with three entries overall—Dangal, Dhoom 3 and PK—but none of those crosses 2 crore in first-week footfalls. The distinction is real even when the totals look close: crossing 2 crore admissions in week one remains rare, and only three films on this list have done it.
Pushpa 2’s Hindi version is the notable contemporary entry at sixth with 1.91 crore. It sits just behind Dangal, an older title, and underlines how difficult it is for a newer release to enter this particular record book despite strong grosses.
For upcoming productions, that 2 crore first-week admissions mark is a useful benchmark. Grosses will keep rising with ticket prices, but the audience-base question is more stable: can a film actually put two crore people into theatres in its opening week? The current list says very few can.
