Zaheer-Sonakshi chose shock over romance in Tu Hai Meri Kiran

Zaheer Iqbal says he and Sonakshi Sinha turned down several romantic films for Tu Hai Meri Kiran, choosing shock value over their Instagram image.

Zaheer and Sonakshi choose shock over their Instagram image

Zaheer Iqbal and Sonakshi Sinha have built a public image around playful, affectionate chemistry. That is exactly the kind of pairing Hindi film producers tend to package into romantic leads — and Zaheer says the offers came. But for their latest outing, the couple chose a thriller that deliberately breaks the image.

In Karan Rawal’s Tu Hai Meri Kiran, released in theatres on 23 October 2026, Zaheer plays a possessive lover. He told Midday that several romantic film offers arrived, but this project stood out for its shock value. Repeating what the couple already does on Instagram would have made a theatre audience feel they were “scrolling on reels” and ready to “swipe up,” he said.

A deliberate break from the Instagram image

The choice is a bet that audiences who follow the couple’s real-life banter will accept them in something more uncomfortable. Zaheer said the preparation was extensive: workshops, extra footage and edits that removed anything too obvious. “It’s one opportunity that you get sometimes to do a character like this, and you don’t want to mess it up,” he said.

Why the contrast matters

Hindi cinema has often marketed star couples as extensions of their real-life romance. Film offers built on a couple’s social media persona can become a trap: familiar, low-risk and repeatable. By refusing that expectation, Zaheer and Sonakshi are asking audiences to separate the feed from the film. The thriller’s positioning rests on contrast rather than familiarity.

  • The offer: Several romantic films arrived after the couple’s playful chemistry won attention.
  • The choice: They picked a thriller where Zaheer plays a possessive, insecure lover.
  • The risk: Viewers may walk in expecting the warmth they see on Instagram.

Equations, trolls and a Salman Khan break

Zaheer also addressed whether the possessive character reflects him. Possessiveness, he said, depends on the equation two people build and the security they create. He added that he does not believe men and women are equal because women are “way more superior.”

He said the couple does not pay much attention to trolling. He also recalled his entry into cinema: Salman Khan saw him dancing at his sister’s wedding and offered him a film on the spot. “It literally fell in my lap,” Zaheer said, adding that he does not take the break for granted.
