SRK at 61: DDLJ still leads with 4.79 crore tickets

Shah Rukh Khan turns 61 today, and the birthday retrospectives have returned to a familiar question: which of his films actually reached the largest audience? A new ranking from MovieTalkies, using figures attributed to Box Office India, answers it through estimated theatrical footfalls rather than original box-office collections.

Why tickets, not collections

Gross figures from 1995 and 2023 cannot be compared cleanly. Ticket prices, screen counts, taxation and reporting practices have all changed. Estimated footfalls count the number of tickets sold, which makes a 1995 release and a 2023 release comparable as a measure of audience reach.

That lens produces a list led by the titles that built the Shah Rukh Khan persona.

  • Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995): approximately 4.79 crore tickets; around ₹53 crore nett in India.
  • Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998): approximately 3.56 crore tickets.
  • Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001): approximately 3.11 crore tickets; around ₹55 crore nett in India.
  • Jawan (2023): approximately 3.10 crore tickets.
  • Karan Arjun (1995): approximately 2.99 crore tickets; crossed ₹25 crore nett in India.

The real gap at the top

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge does not merely lead; it leads by a wide margin. The gap between DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is more than 1.2 crore tickets, which places Aditya Chopra’s debut in a different category from the other four hits. The ranking also excludes DDLJ’s historic Maratha Mandir run, whose 26-year collections were not added to the figure. The film’s actual theatrical reach is therefore higher than the list implies.

Among the top five, Jawan is the only release from the current decade. Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and DDLJ all belong to the 1995-2001 stretch in which SRK’s romantic and family entertainers became repeat-viewing events. Jawan shows that his later action turn could convert scale into footfalls, but the top of the table still belongs to the Nineties romances.

What to take from the list

For Hindi cinema readers, the useful habit is to ask how many tickets a film sold, not only how many crores it collected. A collection record can rise because ticket prices have risen; footfalls measure whether more people actually turned up. That is why a 1995 romance can still sit above a 2023 blockbuster on a credible list.
