Sara Ali Khan: Saif never begged for film roles

Eight years into her Hindi film career, Sara Ali Khan is still being asked to justify the family name. In a conversation with Filmfare, the 31-year-old actor addressed the recurring nepotism question directly: her father, Saif Ali Khan, never intervened to secure her work.

She said she was raised by her mother, Amrita Singh, and did not have a father “negotiating my contracts and begging people to take me in their films.” When a problem arose on Kedarnath, she added, “I sorted it out myself.”

Privilege and its costs

Khan does not pretend the surname was irrelevant. She told Filmfare she is neither “naive nor delusional” about the doors her lineage opened. But she describes the family name as a “double-edged sword”: the same visibility that creates opportunity also creates a higher, often unfair, standard of proof.

She grouped herself with peers such as Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Panday, arguing that all three are judged for a parentage none of them chose, and that the word nepotism has become a blanket dismissal of individual effort.

  • Saif Ali Khan never negotiated her contracts or asked producers to cast her.
  • She was raised by a single mother, Amrita Singh, and says she had no industry “godfather.”
  • She accepts that her family opened early doors but says the scrutiny has been disproportionate.
  • Eight years on, she believes the conversation should have moved from surname to survival.

Why the distinction matters

The argument she is making is not just personal. It is about what a famous surname can and cannot buy in a competitive film industry. Access can secure a first meeting or a covetable debut; it cannot hold an audience for eight years. That is the line Khan is now drawing: the initial advantage was real, but the longevity has to be earned independently.

Her latest release, Udta Teer, directed by Akash A Kaushik, opened in theatres on October 23. The spy comedy also features Ayushmann Khurrana, Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover and Raghubir Yadav, among others.

For film watchers, the useful test is not whether someone got a first film because of a surname; it is what they did with the next seven years. Khan is asking, in effect, to be measured on the second part.
