Dutt pledges to make Kaante 2 in Gupta's memory

Sanjay Dutt has turned grief into a public commitment: he will make Kaante 2, the sequel to the 2002 cult crime thriller Kaante, in memory of filmmaker Sanjay Gupta. The actor said on Instagram that the two friends had recently been discussing the project before Gupta died on Saturday.

In a note that read like a farewell to family, Dutt wrote that he would miss their conversations and that life would not be the same. He added, I will make Kaante 2 your dream, in memory of you my brother — a line that turns an old sequel conversation into a legacy project.

Why the sequel carries weight

Released in 2002, Kaante followed six Indian men in Los Angeles who plan a bank robbery and then begin to suspect that one of them is a police informer. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, the film was led by Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav. It built a strong following over the years and remains one of the notable crime thrillers of its era.

Gupta had been developing the sequel for some time. In a podcast interview in May 2026, he said he and Dutt were regularly in touch and had cracked a basic story. He was preparing to start writing, and he had an ensemble cast in mind. Apart from Dutt, his wishlist included Abhishek Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Varma and Ali Fazal.

We are constantly in touch. We have been working on what to do next. My problem is that it has to come organically.

Gupta said legal complications around the original had kept the sequel from moving ahead for years. Once those issues were resolved, he was ready to put his time into the story. That helps explain why Kaante 2 did not arrive shortly after the original: the wait was structural, not simply creative.

The Dutt-Gupta record

The actor and filmmaker shared a long working history that began with Aatish: Feel The Fire in 1994. Their collaborations include:

  • Aatish: Feel The Fire (1994), their first collaboration
  • Khauff (2000), Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006)
  • Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), which Gupta produced and co-wrote
  • Shootout at Wadala (2013), their later collaboration

No cast, start date or production plan for Kaante 2 has been confirmed. Dutt’s statement keeps the idea alive, but the film still has to be written and produced without Gupta’s voice. For the audience that kept Kaante alive, the sequel now carries two burdens: living up to the original and continuing without the director who shaped it. For now, the promise matters less as a release announcement and more as a marker of a long partnership.
