Saiyami Kher has completed a decade in Hindi cinema, and the anniversary doubles as a statement about how she has chosen work. The actor, who debuted in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya opposite Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, told News18 that the film failed commercially but opened doors, leading to collaborations with Anurag Kashyap, R Balki and Priyadarshan.
In an Instagram note, she wrote that she was “written off” before her career began and was called a “villager.” She added that some people offered unsolicited advice: date an actor or director, or get a lip job, as an easier route into the industry.
For a newcomer awaiting the verdict on a debut, refusing two big films was a risk. In an industry where visibility is often treated as the only currency, her framework offers a different measure: would this character change the story if removed? That question is just as useful to followers of Hindi cinema trying to understand why actors’ filmographies develop the way they do.
The two big films she refused
Kher says the first real test came before her debut had even opened. After she finished shooting Mirzya and before its release, she was offered two very big films. “The brief given to me for them was — teen gaane hai aur hero ke saath do scenes hai,” she told News18. She says she was not given the scripts.
Even as a newcomer, Kher declined. Her reasoning was not about the size of the role in minutes, but about whether it mattered to the story. “I would rather be part of a film where I can say that I play a very important character than do an insignificant part in a big film,” she said.
Character weight, not screen time
The decision became a working standard. Kher points to Breathe: Into the Shadows, the series with Abhishek Bachchan, as validation: her role was not central, but it shifted the arc of the whole story.
- Screen time can be small, but the character must drive the narrative forward.
- The scale of the project matters less than whether the part is significant.
- If she cannot wake up happy about going to work, that is reason enough to say no.
Insecure sets and a clear wish
Kher also acknowledged that not every co-star made the work easy. “Not everyone can be secure. This industry is such that everyone is always hustling and it breeds insecurity,” she said, adding that some stars do not wait to give a reaction during a close-up. She named Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar as exceptions.
Her next hope is specific: a comedy with Priyadarshan. She praised his clarity and efficiency, noting that on Haiwaan her team sometimes wrapped in two to three hours. Kher is also preparing for her international debut with an Indo-Russian drama.
The ten-year marker matters precisely because the choices were not obvious at the time. Kher’s account frames a low-commercial debut not as a setback but as the start of a filter: say yes to the part that changes the story, and no to the cameo that merely decorates it.
