Sai Pallavi’s road to Sita: three industries, one mythic role

Before Sai Pallavi plays Sita in Ramayana Part 1, Rediff's list revisits the South Indian performances that made the casting worth arguing about.

The Sai Pallavi syllabus before Ramayana: Premam to Gargi

Before Sai Pallavi walks into Hindi cinema’s biggest mythological frame as Sita in Ramayana: Part 1, there is a decade of work across three film industries that explains the casting. The anticipation is not built on a single audition or a familiar face; it is built on performances that repeatedly refused the usual heroine template.

From Malar to Sita

Sai Pallavi first registered in Malayalam cinema in 2015 as Malar in Alphonse Puthren’s Premam. The film’s own text pointed out that she did not conform to mainstream cinema’s narrow beauty standards, but audiences did not care. Her dancing in Rockaankuthu and the warmth of her college-teacher role made her an instant favourite.

Since then she has worked across Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu cinema, winning a Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her Telugu debut Fidaa and earning acclaim for Kali, Virata Parvam, Gargi and Amaran. Her actual Hindi debut, Aamir Khan’s Ek Din, was a remake of the Thai film One Day, shot in Japan, with Junaid Khan as the male lead. It underperformed, so most Hindi-speaking viewers have still not seen her act.

Where to start

Rediff’s retrospective suggests a short syllabus before Ramayana: Part 1 arrives. The essential viewing list includes:

  • Premam (2015): The breakout role where Malar’s middle-section story became the film’s emotional peak. Streaming on JioHotstar.
  • Kali (2016): A road-trip thriller with Dulquer Salmaan that turns a brittle marriage into an edge-of-the-seat ride. Streaming on JioHotstar and Prime Video.
  • Fidaa (2017): Her Telugu debut opposite Varun Tej, a romance built on agency and ego clashes. Streaming on JioHotstar and Prime Video.
  • Virata Parvam (2022): A Naxal-era drama with Rana Daggubati that deserved a better box-office run. Streaming on Netflix.
  • Gargi (2022): Her strongest lead performance, a courtroom drama about a daughter defending her accused father. Streaming on Sony LIV.
  • Amaran (2024): A biopic of Major Mukund Varadarajan in which she supplies much of the emotional weight. Streaming on Netflix.

For those short on time, Gargi, Premam and Fidaa form a compact run: one shows her range, one her raw charm, one her romantic rhythm.

What the casting asks of the North

Ramayana: Part 1, billed as Indian cinema’s most expensive film, will place her opposite Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Rama. Some sections of the audience have already pushed back against her casting, working from set ideas about how Sita should appear. The better reference point is not appearance but body of work. A performer who held the screen in Gargi and Premam carries a different kind of authority into a mythic role, and it is worth seeing the filmography before judging the frame.
