An opening-day net collection of Rs 70 crore would be a commanding number for Ramayana, but it may not be the record-level start that the raw figure implies. A Moneycontrol analysis of Bollywood Hungama data, converted to 2026 prices, shows at least 12 films have crossed the mark over the past decade.
The adjusted field above Rs 70 crore
Inflation changes the meaning of an opening figure. A film that collected Rs 52.25 crore in 2018 is not automatically smaller than one collecting Rs 70 crore today; its rupee value has to be brought forward before the comparison is fair.
- Jawan (September 2023): Rs 75 crore actual; Rs 88.6 crore in 2026 prices.
- Pushpa 2: The Rule (December 2024): Rs 72 crore actual; Rs 80.5 crore adjusted.
- Thugs of Hindostan (November 2018): Rs 52.25 crore actual; Rs 79.6 crore adjusted.
- War (October 2019): Rs 53.35 crore actual; Rs 78.1 crore adjusted.
- Avengers: Endgame (April 2019): Rs 53.1 crore actual; Rs 77.8 crore adjusted.
Older titles extend the list. Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year, released in 2014, moves from Rs 44.97 crore to Rs 83.1 crore in current prices; Dhoom 3, from 2013, reaches Rs 73.6 crore after adjustment. Animal, from 2023, stands at Rs 75.3 crore adjusted.
The current high-water mark belongs to Dhurandhar The Revenge, which collected Rs 90 crore on its first day in March 2026.
Why this matters for Ramayana
Adjusted figures account for changes in the general price level, not for differences in ticket pricing, screen counts, language versions or the scale of a release slate. That makes an inflation-adjusted list a partial lens, but it still sets a useful threshold: a Rs 70 crore opening would be substantial in absolute terms, yet it would sit well below the strongest adjusted starts.
For readers who follow Hindi cinema’s record-keeping closely, this is a useful corrective. The first-day number is often treated as the easiest proof of event-film status, but it only becomes meaningful when older figures are put on the same price footing.
Opening day is demand, not destiny
The comparison also carries a warning from history. Thugs of Hindostan produced one of the biggest adjusted openings in this set, then failed to sustain momentum. Opening-day collections measure advance interest and launch scale; they do not forecast a film’s lifetime commercial outcome.
For Ramayana, the number should therefore be read as a serious first-day result rather than a claim on the record books—at least until the full run is counted.
