Mirzapur: The Movie hits Prime Video with an extended cut

Mirzapur: The Movie has made its streaming debut on Prime Video after its theatrical release, giving the franchise a second window and a longer form. The film is now available in India and over 240 countries and territories, with an extended cut that includes scenes not shown in cinemas.

Back to the Season 1 timeline

Rather than continue after the series, the film places its story in the timeline of Season 1. It returns to the familiar contest for control in Purvanchal and extends the action from Purvanchal to the registan, a journey the makers present as an untold chapter. Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu lead the returning ensemble, supported by Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Rajesh Tailang and others.

The frame matters because it lets the movie deepen known rivalries instead of asking audiences to accept a new chronology.

Why the streaming cut matters

Prime Video’s release is not a bare transfer. Director Gurmmeet Singh told Bollywood Hungama that the film “features an extended cut with never-before-seen scenes.” That is the central streaming incentive: viewers who caught the theatrical version have a reason to return, while new viewers get the longest version first.

Producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar added that taking the franchise to the big screen was a new experience, and they hope the OTT window helps it reach more people. Manish Menghani, Director and Head of SVOD Content Acquisition at Prime Video India, framed the title as a homecoming for a franchise whose dialogues and characters have become part of popular culture.

What to know before you watch

  • Placement: The film is set during Season 1, not after the series.
  • Version: The Prime Video cut is an extended version with never-before-seen scenes.
  • Team: Written by Puneet Krishna, directed by Gurmmeet Singh, produced by Excel Entertainment and presented with Amazon MGM Studios.
  • Availability: Streaming exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories.

The larger pattern

The move reflects a pattern in which theatrical films are followed by streaming premieres that carry incremental material. For franchises with deep fan bases, the extended cut functions as both a retention tool and a news hook: the platform can market the film again without repositioning it as a sequel. In Mirzapur’s case, the series legacy gives the film a second life, and the film reintroduces the property to audiences who know the characters through dialogue and popular culture.

For viewers, the question is not just whether the story works, but what the added scenes change. The extended cut makes a comparison possible: the theatrical version was one telling, the streaming version another.
