Karan Johar says he is steering his kids away from Bollywood

Karan Johar is steering his own kids away from Bollywood

Karan Johar has spent much of his career making Bollywood look like the place to be. On an episode of Koffee With Karan with Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, he offered a different message for his own children: he is “almost dissuading” them from entering the film business.

His reason was direct. “I will be too old to protect them at that time,” he said, describing the industry as “not an easy place” and “tough.”

Karan is father to twins Yash and Roohi, born via surrogacy in February 2017. Yash is named after Karan’s father, filmmaker Yash Johar; Roohi’s name is an anagram of his mother Hiroo Johar’s name. That family line makes the admission striking: Karan is the son of a veteran producer and has built one of Hindi cinema’s most prominent production houses.

The counterpoint from Kareena

Kareena Kapoor gently pushed back on the framing. She suggested that parental protection may itself be part of the problem, and that families sometimes have to let the next generation struggle. Karan agreed before the conversation moved on.

Why this matters

For readers who follow Hindi cinema closely, the exchange is a reminder that proximity to the industry does not always produce ambition for the next generation. It can produce caution. Karan Johar’s position as a producer and launchpad-maker means he has watched the pressures of the business from the inside; his hesitance is framed as realism rather than rejection.

  • Karan said he is “almost dissuading” Yash and Roohi from the film business.
  • His stated fear is that he will be too old to protect them when the time comes.
  • Kareena argued that overprotection may be the problem; Karan agreed.

The family-business question

Hindi cinema has long treated film families as a pipeline. Karan’s own career is one example of that inheritance. His comment does not announce that Yash and Roohi will never enter the industry; “almost dissuading” is a softer, more anxious position. It signals fear while leaving the possibility open.

Kareena’s reply adds another layer. If the business is tough, sheltering children from early struggle may not prepare them for it. The two views are less opposites than competing definitions of protection: one wants to reduce risk, the other wants to build resilience.

The significance lies in who is saying it. A producer whose own path was shaped by family legacy is not encouraging the same path for his children. That is a measured, even protective, reversal of the dynasty logic that often governs Hindi cinema.

It also leaves the future open. The twins are young; no decision has been announced. For now, Karan is publicly framing Bollywood as a place to enter with open eyes, not with entitlement.
