The picture was released in the United States and Canada on May 17, with IMAX theatres opening a day earlier. Into Darkness was a box office hit and earned favorable reviews from reviewers. It is the highest-grossing entry in the Star Trek franchise, with nearly $467 million in worldwide box office receipts. The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 86th Academy Awards. In 2016, it was followed by Star Trek Beyond.
