First-time membership fees, on top of annual dues, pile up quickly, and being a member of the union is no guarantee that you’ll go on television and earn enough money to pay off those dues. Of course, this isn’t to suggest you shouldn’t join the union; it’s just that it’s a lengthy procedure.
Because reality shows are not affiliated with SAG, any talent put on them will receive whatever exposure they do at no expense to them. Consider this: Suppose you’re watching a 12-episode series; that’s 12 hours of screen time—possibly network screen time—for which you paid $0.
