Studio Ghibli, based in Koganei, Tokyo, is a Japanese animation film studio. The studio is primarily known for its animated feature films, although it has also produced a number of short subjects, advertisements, and one television film.

Totoro, a gigantic cat-like spirit from the 1988 anime film My Neighbor Totoro, serves as the studio’s mascot and most famous symbol. Spirited Away (2001), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Ponyo (2008) are among Studio Ghibli’s highest-grossing films.

After the success of Topcraft’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), the studio was created on June 15, 1985, by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, as well as producer Toshio Suzuki. It has also worked on the visual development of various video games with video game firms.

Five of the studio’s films are among Japan’s top 10 grossing anime feature films. Spirited Away is in second place, with a domestic gross of 31.68 billion yen and a worldwide gross of almost US$380 million, while Princess Mononoke is in fourth place with a domestic gross of 20.18 billion yen.

Following Miyazaki’s retirement on August 3, 2014, Studio Ghibli temporarily halted production. Suzuki started in February 2017 that Miyazaki had returned from retirement to direct a new movie titled How Do You Live?
