Ed Sheeran recorded his first Hindi film song in one night

Sheeran says a request from Shah Rukh Khan led to Tu Mil Jaaye for King, written and recorded the same night he met Sachin-Jigar.

Ed Sheeran recorded his first Hindi film song in one night

Ed Sheeran’s entry into Hindi film music did not begin with a formal label push or a long studio booking. By his account, it opened with a direct request from Shah Rukh Khan: make a song for his next film, and let that song be Sheeran’s first Bollywood track.

The result is “Tu Mil Jaaye,” released on November 2, the day Shah Rukh celebrated his birthday. The song brings Sheeran together with Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi, with music by Sachin-Jigar and lyrics by Kumaar.

One night at Shah Rukh’s home

Sheeran shared a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram and explained how the collaboration came together. On an earlier India visit, he and Arijit Singh went to Shah Rukh’s home to ask the actor to appear in the video for “Sapphire,” Sheeran’s track with Arijit. Shah Rukh then returned the favour. That same day, he introduced Sheeran to Sachin-Jigar. According to Sheeran, he wrote and recorded his verse for “Tu Mil Jaaye” the same night.

Shah Rukh later thanked him on social media and pointed to the Hindi sections: “Can’t thank u enough my friend for doing the song…especially the Hindi bits.”

Why the speed matters

For followers of Hindi film music, the sequence is the story. International voices have appeared in film songs before, usually through planned features or licensed hooks. Here the relationship came first, and the recording followed within hours. That turns an otherwise promotional single into a small case study in star equity: a favour asked, returned and converted into finished material before the day ended.

Sheeran wrote that he was pleased to have Arijit on the track, calling it “all my favourite people on one project.” The music video also returns Shah Rukh and Deepika Padukone to the same frame, giving the campaign a romantic centre after their earlier runs in Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan and Jawan.

What comes next

King is directed by Siddharth Anand and is scheduled to open on December 24, 2026. The cast includes Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Abhay Verma, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Raghav Juyal.

  • Song: “Tu Mil Jaaye,” released November 2 on Shah Rukh’s birthday.
  • Voices: Ed Sheeran, Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi.
  • Music and lyrics: Sachin-Jigar and Kumaar.
  • Film: King, opening December 24, 2026.

For listeners, the track is available now as an early sample of a film that has already assembled one of the season’s most watched campaigns. For Hindi cinema, Sheeran’s overnight recording is a reminder of how much a personal equation can shape a soundtrack credit.
