In the late 1980s, Govinda was trying to find his footing in Bollywood. At that time, Govinda thought of giving television a shot too. He auditioned for the role of Abhimanyu in TV’s cult show Mahabharat (1988). But luckily, at that time Tan-Badan happened. This was Govinda’s first lead role opposite Khushbu. The film was directed by his uncle Anand.
Thereafter, Govinda never looked back at TV as he acted in nearly 50 films for the next six years. While, the actor started off with supporting roles, sharing screen space with Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, and Dharmendra in popular films.
However, his ticket to stardom was the ‘No. 1’ series of films. These films were mostly helmed by filmmaker David Dhawan. Govinda’s films like Raja Babu, Hadh Kar Di Aapne, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Saajan Chale Sasural, and many more continue to remain a genre in itself.
Nonetheless, all Govinda films had “Great dance on great songs and great comedy”. Although Govinda always maintained that the characters he played were nowhere similar to his real self, there was no one like Govinda. The kind of comedy he brought to Hindi cinema was beyond timing.
Moreover, no one can ignore his pelvic moves? Govinda’s dance continues to remain unmatchable. The actor’s songs are the life of many house parties to date. While Govinda’s dance steps and expression had uniqueness, the actor says, “When I did those things, I never thought about it. My basic line is that I try to be honest and that gives me the power to continue doing good work”.
Apart from his dance style, Govinda managed to stand out with his dialogue delivery as well. From starring with Amitabh Bachchan to Salman Khan, he got the giant share of laughs. In addition to his super collaboration with director David Dhawan and actor Kader Khan, Govinda teamed up with Neelam, Karisma Kapoor, and Raveena Tandon. Govinda’s films were massy family entertainers that ruled the 90s. His dramatics remains a reference point for several actors even today.
