Anurag Kashyap’s second act as a screen performer is expanding. The makers of the Telugu action thriller Kaaka have announced that the Hindi cinema auteur has joined the film in what they described as a “powerful and pivotal role,” sharing a behind-the-scenes image of director Bobby Kolli explaining a scene to Kashyap on the Hyderabad set.
The announcement
The production welcomed the Gangs of Wasseypur director with the line, “THE WORLD OF KAAKA JUST GOT DEADLIER.” Kashyap is part of the current schedule, which began on September 7; the team has also begun dubbing after a traditional pooja, with other post-production work running alongside.
Kaaka, directed by Bobby Kolli, is his second collaboration with Chiranjeevi after Waltair Veerayya. Anaswara Rajan and Nivetha Pethuraj are also in the cast, and more names are expected. The film is set for a January 13, 2027 release, timed to the Sankranti window.
A teaser built on mystery
Chiranjeevi had earlier revealed his character as Kadiri Kalidas, but the birthday teaser introduced him as Satyam, a supervisor at a shrimp farm named Ammaji Aqua Industries. The teaser’s most striking image is built around that setting: a key falls into a pool of shrimp, Satyam retrieves it with a giant electromagnet, and weapons surface from the water in the process. The key carries a keychain reading “I love dad,” a small detail that hints at a backstory the film is keeping hidden.
The makers are reportedly planning a large action sequence at the end of the first half, with the interval fight positioned as one of the film’s highlights.
Why it matters for Hindi cinema
For Bollywood Chronicle readers, the news is less about a single casting and more about a pattern. A director who shaped modern Hindi independent cinema through films such as Gangs of Wasseypur has been taking roles across South Indian industries for a while. Kaaka is a prominent continuation of that cross-industry movement.
That movement matters because it is redrawing the map of Indian film. Talent that once stayed within one language market now circulates more freely across industries. For audiences, it means familiar Hindi names showing up in southern productions; for producers, it is a way to broaden a film’s reach beyond a single region.
The framing is useful: we are no longer watching a guest appearance but a working second act. Kashyap is accumulating credits not as a favour but as a performer.
What to hold onto
- Role: announced as “powerful and pivotal”; the character’s name has not been revealed.
- Director: Bobby Kolli, reuniting with Chiranjeevi after Waltair Veerayya.
- Teaser twist: Chiranjeevi appears as Satyam, while an earlier reveal named the character Kadiri Kalidas.
- Release: January 13, 2027, Sankranti weekend.
For front-row followers of Hindi cinema, the question now is what Kashyap brings to a mass Telugu action film—and whether this second act will eventually feed back into the Hindi stories he is known for.
