Sanjay Gupta, Kaante director, dies after head injury

Sanjay Gupta, the director who shaped a muscular strain of Hindi crime cinema with films such as Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Mumbai Saga, died on Saturday morning after a head injury at his Mumbai residence. He was laid to rest the same evening at Pawan Hans Crematorium.

A final gathering in Mumbai

The funeral brought together actors, producers and collaborators from different phases of Gupta’s career. According to The News Mill, Abhishek Bachchan and Rakesh Roshan attended, as did Manoj Bajpayee, Fardeen Khan, Rajpal Yadav, Rahul Dev, Rajat Bedi and Atul Agnihotri. Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri, the leads of Gupta’s last directorial release The Miranda Brothers (2024), were also present.

The Dutt partnership

Gupta’s filmography is inseparable from his long collaboration with Sanjay Dutt. Their work together runs through eight titles: Aatish: Feel the Fire, Jung, Khauff, Kaante, Plan, Musafir, Zinda and Shootout at Lokhandwala.

In a public tribute, Dutt wrote that the two had recently discussed a sequel. “We were just discussing Kante 2 recently,” he posted. “I will make Kaante 2 your dream, in memory of you.”

An industry mourns

Rajpal Yadav described the death as “a huge blow” to the film industry. Subhash Ghai recalled a “progressive director and producer” and a good friend. Kajol called the news “heartbreaking,” while Kunal Kohli remembered serving on an awards jury with Gupta and the arguments and laughter that followed.

Dutt’s message turns an obituary into something with a future tense: Kaante 2 had been under discussion, and he has now pledged to complete it as Gupta’s dream. That promise, made in grief, is likely to be watched closely by audiences who grew up on the original.

Why his work matters

For readers who follow Hindi cinema as a record, Gupta’s name marks a particular register: city-bound crime dramas with multi-character tension, betrayal and loyalty. Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Mumbai Saga, Shootout at Wadala and Jung sit in that tradition, alongside Kaabil, Plan, Musafir and Zinda. Even where the films divided opinion, they kept a commercial language for the crime thriller alive on the Hindi screen.

The filmography that remains

Gupta’s most recent directorial release was The Miranda Brothers in 2024. He also produced Visfot, featuring Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, and directed the 2021 release Mumbai Saga with John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi. He remained active on X, where he often shared opinions about the film industry’s workings.
