R Madhavan is set to lead a new horror feature from Vishal Furia, the director behind the Chhorii universe. The announcement, made from Mumbai, pairs a star closely associated with Hindi horror’s cult past with a filmmaker who has spent recent years expanding its present.
The project will be produced by Rohit Ranjan under Frostlit Production Limited. No title, shoot schedule or release window has been shared yet.
A first-choice lead
Furia was unambiguous about the casting. Madhavan, he said, was his “first and only choice” for the film, and the actor has already begun preparing for the world of the story. The director pointed to 13B: Fear Has a New Address as a formative favourite, calling Madhavan “the true OG horror star” of the film.
Furia added that Madhavan’s experience as a writer, director and producer will bring a special dimension to the project. The stated ambition is to create “the kind of fear they will feel in their bones”.
Two horror histories converge
The announcement matters because of what each collaborator represents in the genre.
- Madhavan starred in 13B (2009), a film that has become a cult reference point for Indian horror, and later in the supernatural thriller Shaitaan.
- Furia began with the Marathi horror Lapachhapi, then built the Chhorii universe and recently directed Maa, starring Kajol.
- The project, produced by Frostlit Production Limited, combines an actor known for psychological dread with a director known for folk horror.
For a project still untitled, the announcement leans on two established bodies of work. Madhavan offers a recognisable face for audiences who found 13B long after its release, while Furia brings a record of turning Marathi and Hindi horror traditions into connected stories.
What the record tells us
13B: Fear Has a New Address, directed by Vikram Kumar and released in 2009, follows Manohar, a man who moves into a new apartment on the 13th floor with his family. Their routine takes a disturbing turn when a spirit begins communicating through the television set. The film was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil, with the Tamil version titled Yavarum Nalam.
Shaitaan, directed by Vikas Bahl, adapted the 2023 Gujarati film Vash. Its story centres on a family whose daughter falls under a stranger’s black magic, forcing them to fight the possession and uncover his motives. Madhavan appeared alongside Ajay Devgn and Jyothika.
Furia’s track record gives the new feature an immediate context. Lapachhapi established his horror voice, and the Chhorii universe carried that voice into Hindi. A project with Madhavan is therefore less a one-off announcement than the meeting of two genre records.
What to watch for
For Hindi cinema watchers, the practical question is whether the film becomes a title to track. Until a title and release date arrive, the signal is the pairing itself: Furia has a clear house style, and Madhavan’s horror roles have aged well. The promise of fear “in their bones” is a high bar, but it is one this combination can credibly attempt.
