Imtiaz Ali Confirms The Idiot of Istanbul Is Shelved

Imtiaz Ali confirms The Idiot of Istanbul, which would have been Fahadh Faasil's first Hindi lead, is shelved. Both remain keen to work together.

Imtiaz Ali shelves Fahadh Faasil's Hindi debut

Imtiaz Ali has confirmed that The Idiot of Istanbul, the planned collaboration with Fahadh Faasil, will not move ahead. Speaking at the Jagran Film Festival in Mumbai, the director said the project did not “materialise”, though he and Fahadh remain in touch and still want to work together.

What was at stake

The shelving matters because of the debut it carried. Had the film gone into production, it would have been Fahadh Faasil’s first leading role in a Hindi-language production. Fahadh has built his reputation in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, and a Hindi lead was being watched as a marker of how South Indian acting talent crosses into mainstream Bollywood.

Ali described the mutual interest with a phrase that puts the timing in perspective: “dono taraf hai aag barabar lagi hui” — roughly, the fire is equally lit on both sides. He added that at some point he will have the pleasure of working with Fahadh.

Why it matters now

For readers of Bollywood Chronicle, this is less a shock than a schedule correction. When Ali first discussed the project in an earlier roundtable, he said it might not be his next film and that the timing was not confirmed. The latest announcement officially removes it from the pipeline rather than ending the pairing altogether.

Fahadh’s multilingual expansion makes the context clearer. His first leading Telugu film, Don’t Trouble The Trouble, released earlier this month, so a Hindi lead was a logical next marker in a career that keeps crossing language boundaries.

  • The Idiot of Istanbul was a long-held directing ambition, not a locked production.
  • It would have been Fahadh Faasil’s first Hindi-language lead.
  • Both sides say the interest in collaborating has not cooled.

What each is doing next

Ali’s most recent release was Main Vaapas Aaunga (2026), starring Vedang Raina, Diljit Dosanjh and Sharvari. He is now reportedly reuniting with Sharvari and Raina for an untitled romantic drama that is expected to go on floors in November.

Fahadh, meanwhile, was also seen in Idhayam Murali and Patriot this year. His next leading role, Karate Chandran, went on floors this month.

The episode is a reminder that in Indian cinema, a celebrated pairing can be announced long before it becomes a start date. Interest was never the missing piece; the schedule was.
