PVR INOX record Q2 as Indian box office hits Rs 4,443 cr

India's box office hit Rs 4,443 crore in a quarter for the first time, and PVR INOX posted record revenue and profit.

PVR INOX record Q2 as Indian box office hits Rs 4,443 cr

The Indian theatrical market has crossed a threshold it had never reached before. Gross box office collections for the July-September quarter of FY27 touched Rs 4,443 crore, up 23% year on year and past Rs 4,000 crore for the first time in a single quarter, according to Ormax Media and company estimates cited by PVR INOX.

For Hindi-cinema followers, that milestone matters as much as the studio slates: it changes the baseline for what a healthy quarter looks like across the exhibition business.

PVR INOX posts record numbers

PVR INOX reported its highest-ever quarterly revenue, EBITDA and profit after tax on an Ind AS 116-adjusted basis. Revenue rose 17% to Rs 2,133 crore, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 44% to Rs 4,752 million and the margin widened from 18.1% to 22.3%. Profit after tax from continuing operations grew 111% to Rs 2,733 million.

Managing Director Ajay Bijli called it “a landmark quarter for Indian cinema and PVR INOX”, attributing the result to “strong content, higher consumer spends and disciplined costs.” He added that margins are “now well above pre-COVID levels, a clear sign of a structurally stronger business.”

What drove the quarter

PVR INOX welcomed 46.3 million patrons, a 4% year-on-year increase, while occupancy improved to 30.4% from 28.7%. Average ticket price rose 14% to Rs 298, and average food-and-beverage spend per head also rose 14% to Rs 153. Ticketing and F&B revenues each grew 18%.

The quarter’s mix shows why revenue moved faster than footfalls:

  • India Q2 gross box office: Rs 4,443 crore, up 23% year on year.
  • First-half FY27 gross box office: Rs 7,618 crore, up 22%.
  • English-language collections: Rs 1,024 crore, up 87%, led by Spider-Man: Brand New Day at Rs 608 crore.
  • Hindi collections: up 12%, with Hanuman Ansh at Rs 351 crore and Mirzapur: The Movie at Rs 267 crore.

Balance sheet and screen expansion

The chain generated Rs 6,035 million in free cash flow in the first half and repaid Rs 2,586 million of debt. It completed its first Rs 3,000 million share buyback in September, and still ended the quarter with net cash of Rs 1,407 million, against Rs 807 million in June. A new capital allocation policy targets returning roughly 30% of annual surplus cash through dividends or buybacks, subject to board approval.

PVR INOX operated 1,797 screens across 114 cities. It opened 24 screens and exited 25 during the first half, and plans 90 to 100 new screens in FY27, mostly through capital-light models. Its first SMART Cinema opened in Muzaffarpur, Bihar in September, with two to three more planned this financial year.

The next test for Hindi cinema

The Hindi pipeline is central to whether the record holds. PVR INOX’s outlook points to Ramayana: Part One in November and Shah Rukh Khan’s King in December, followed by Love & War and Golmaal 5 in the fourth quarter. If those titles perform, the July-September record may begin to look less like a peak and more like a new normal.
