After 39 years, Ram and Sita reunite for OTT film Notice

Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala, the actors who became household names as Ram and Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s 1987 television classic Ramayan, are returning together in their first feature film in nearly 39 years. Titled Notice, the film is directed by Pradeep Gupta and will begin streaming on Waves on November 6.

A modern-day Ramayan in a village

Producer-actor Aditya Pratap Singh Raghuvanshi frames the film as a contemporary restaging of the Ram-Sita relationship. Set in a village, Notice follows Govil as an ordinary man who challenges a corrupt system; Chikhlia plays his wife, who stands beside him through the struggle.

The pairing is doing deliberate symbolic work. Raghuvanshi told Mid-Day: “Who can tell this story better than Ram and Sita?” He added that where truth and untruth fight, “Ram and Sita’s jodi has to be there.” The story turns on a 150-year-old shop and the people displaced by development.

That is the central bet of Notice: it borrows the moral authority of television’s most recognisable on-screen couple and places it inside a legal and social drama. For viewers who grew up with the 1987 serial, the reunion is not merely a casting announcement; it is a restoration of shared cultural memory.

Why the film is going straight to OTT

The release plan is aimed squarely at that memory. The makers chose Waves for the digital premiere, and the film will also play on 36 satellite channels. Raghuvanshi explained that theatre audiences today tend to have an urban mindset, while the actors’ fans are largely television viewers. Mobile-first distribution, he suggested, lets the entire country access the film and the pairing.

The scheduling also places Notice just ahead of Govil’s next mythological turn. He appears as King Dashrath in Ramayana: Part 1, which releases on November 8. In effect, audiences will see Govil twice in one week—once as a modern-day everyman and once inside the epic universe that made him famous.

For the industry, Notice is a useful test of a wider pattern: nostalgia-led casting paired with a television-first distribution strategy. Rather than competing for multiplex attention, the film is going where its audience already lives.

  • Film: Notice
  • Director: Pradeep Gupta
  • Streaming: Waves, November 6
  • Satellite: 36 channels
  • Previous reunion: 2024 music video Humare Ram Aaye Hai

The two actors last shared a screen in the 2024 music video Humare Ram Aaye Hai, but Notice is their first feature together in 39 years. That gap is part of the film’s pitch: an event built on familiarity rather than novelty.

Call it mythic shorthand: when an actor is already fixed in the public imagination as an ideal figure, bringing that residue to a new role compresses a lot of storytelling into a single face. The film does not have to explain that its hero is righteous; the audience already carries that association. That is the promise, and also the risk—the new character must earn what the old iconography gives freely.

Whether the symbolic casting can hold a contemporary narrative will be the question once the film begins streaming. The makers are betting that affection for Ram and Sita translates into attention for a story about displacement and justice.
