Yami Gautam’s Plan B Was Farming; Now 72nd National Award Winner

Yami Gautam had bought land in Himachal and planned to quit films for farming if Uri failed. Uri and Bala changed her path to a National Award.

Yami Gautam Was Ready to Quit Films for Farming; Now a National Award

Yami Gautam’s Hindi-film career nearly ended before its second act. In an interview with The Indian Express, she said she had bought land in Himachal Pradesh and was prepared to leave Mumbai for farming if Uri: The Surgical Strike did not work. That detail reframes her later National Award as a near-miss that could have gone the other way.

A long stretch after Vicky Donor

Yami entered Hindi films with Vicky Donor in 2012, directed by Shoojit Sircar. That debut was a hit, but the next several years did not repeat it. Box Office India graded multiple releases as failures or disasters, including:

  • Total Siyapaa and Action Jackson in 2014
  • Sanam Re and Junooniyat in 2016
  • Sarkar 3 in 2017 and Batti Gul Meter Chalu in 2018

There were bright spots: Badlapur in 2015 was graded a hit, and Kaabil in 2017 drew mixed trade assessments. But the pattern was uneven, and Yami began to think seriously about an alternative life.

The escape route was farming

Her backup plan was concrete. She had already purchased land in Himachal Pradesh. If Uri had failed, she planned to pack up, return home, and take up farming. For readers who track Hindi cinema closely, that is the lesson: a career is not only about talent but about surviving long dry spells until the right project arrives.

Uri and Bala reset the graph

Released on 11 January 2019, Uri: The Surgical Strike was directed by Aditya Dhar and starred Vicky Kaushal. Yami played Pallavi Sharma. Box Office India called it a super blockbuster. In the same year, Bala, where she played Pari Mishra, was graded a super hit. Back-to-back successes gave her career a new direction.

Yami used the momentum to choose roles with more range. OMG 2 and Article 370 showed different registers; in Article 370 she played NIA officer Zooni Haksar.

Recognition at the 72nd National Film Awards

At the 72nd National Film Awards, announced in 2026, Yami Gautam won Best Actress for Article 370; the film also took Best Feature Film. The honour closes a loop that began with a near-exit to Himachal Pradesh.

Since then, Yami has kept widening the slate: Dhoom Dhaam and Haq in 2025, a cameo in Dhurandhar: The Revenge in 2026, and Nayi Naveli, released on 16 October. The record of Hindi cinema is full of comebacks, but few hinge so explicitly on one film.
