When a fan suggested that Nayyi Navelli had lost the calendar game by opening a day after Jailer 2, Yami Gautam replied not with frustration but with a plain reading of how Hindi film releases now work: clean windows are scarce, and the audience deserves thanks for choosing a smaller film anyway.
Nayyi Navelli, Gautam’s horror comedy directed by Balaji Mohan, opened on October 16. A user on X said the film was good but that its timing against Jailer 2 was not optimum. Gautam responded directly.
What Gautam said about the clash
Gautam wrote that “a solo or just 2 films release window is difficult” to secure now. She added that making a successful film is already hard, and that she appreciated the effort behind the release and the audience for giving the film a chance.
She made no complaint about the bigger title. Instead, she called herself “a huge Rajni sir fan” and said it was “an honour” for her small film to release alongside Rajinikanth, adding that she was looking forward to watching Jailer 2.
The opening-weekend scoreboard
According to Sacnilk, Nayyi Navelli collected Rs 11.65 crore net in India over its first three days. The film’s domestic gross stood at Rs 13.88 crore.
- Friday: Rs 3.25 crore net
- Saturday: Rs 4 crore net
- Sunday: Rs 4.40 crore net
The daywise improvement suggests the horror comedy gained some traction through the weekend rather than fading after opening day.
Jailer 2 was an entirely different event. The film collected Rs 55.85 crore net in India on Sunday alone, taking its four-day domestic net total to Rs 199.90 crore; its worldwide gross was reported at Rs 424.25 crore.
What the exchange reveals
The exchange is not simply about one film’s date. It is a reminder of the structural squeeze on mid-sized Hindi releases. A solo or two-film window was once a workable plan; today the calendar is crowded with franchise titles and event films, and smaller films often have to share screens and attention while trying to build word of mouth.
The two films are not competing in the same category: one is a pan-India franchise sequel with an established star, the other a horror comedy aimed at a Hindi audience. But the gap in their numbers shows why release timing can be the most watched pre-release decision in the trade.
For a film like Nayyi Navelli, Gautam’s response is a useful template: acknowledge the market reality, treat the larger film as a source of excitement rather than a rival, and direct attention back to the audience’s choice. The weekend uptick gives the film a slender but real argument for the weekdays ahead.
