It’s hard to pinpoint where it all begins but after telling hysterical stories purely made for entertainment, Bollywood has awakened to a new are of stories. The 108 old industry is now finally telling stories that matter, stories that affect you and I. The recent trend of Bollywood films are full of stories based on social issue or patriotism, take Uri for example or Pad man or Udta Punjab. All the movie reflects those ugly part of our nation that we all have turned our faces away from. On one hand, India is a progressive and modern nation, on the other hand, the country is consumed by things like Honour killing, drugs and a staggering number of rape cases.
June 2013, India was just recovering from the scars of the heinous Nirbhaya rape case, waves of riots and fight with government established new law and reforms. The moment we took a breath of relief news from a small village, 20km away from Kolkata jarred us – 3 bandhua minors were gang-raped and hanged from the tree, their fault was that they were women, worst they belonged to lower caste. The chilling story moved director Anubhav Sinha and he promised himself to tell the story and that’s how the trailer of Article 15 dropped today.
Article 15 narrates the story of those three minor girls who were mercilessly raped and hanged on a tree. Actor Ayushman Khurana will be seen playing the role of the cop who is assigned the case. The bandhua gang rape case rippled a wave of violent movements until the culprits were arrested. After that everything went back to normal, files on rape case continued to pile up on each other creating, God knows how many mountains of such files. Now after 5 years a movie is made on this case to tell an untold story of the incident this, hopefully, the power of media will come to play again, and the country will change at least a bit.
