Vidya Balan on the ‘jinx’ label that kept her from South cinema

Ahead of Jailer 2, Vidya Balan revisits the 'jinx' label that kept her away from South cinema and now sees those shelved films as a matter of timing.

Vidya Balan on being once branded a jinx in South cinema

Vidya Balan is returning to Tamil cinema with Rajinikanth in Jailer 2, a high-profile comeback that carries an old wound. Ahead of the film’s October 15, 2026 release, she told SCREEN that an early “jinx” label once made her reject every screen offer outside Hindi.

The cost of an industry label

Balan said several of her early Tamil and Malayalam projects never reached the floor. Her Malayalam debut, Chakram, with Mohanlal, was among the shelved films. As she recalled, “I was replaced even before the shooting because of that whole ‘jinx’ thing.”

The label did not only cost her roles; it narrowed her choices. For a while, she said, “I wasn’t mentally open to doing films in any language, but Hindi.”

Timing, not ability

Balan now describes those early losses differently. “Over time, I’ve matured and realised that was just the time. It doesn’t have to do with anything else,” she said. “And as an actor, we’re hungry to do good roles.”

Balan, a Tamilian, said that makes the project especially meaningful. “Because I’m a Tamilian, I’m excited about Jailer 2,” she said.

That hunger brings her to Jailer 2, the sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer. Nelson Dilipkumar directs and Sun Pictures produces. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian.

Balan joins a cast that includes Mithun Chakraborty, S J Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff.

The smoking scene

Balan also spoke about a scene in which she smokes in front of Rajinikanth. She said her hands trembled because the nicotine affected her body, not because she hesitated to smoke on screen.

“I’m not shy about smoking on screen. It was just that my body wasn’t used to it,” she said, adding that she was conscious of blowing smoke in the superstar’s face.

Why it matters

For Hindi cinema viewers, the story is a small industry history lesson: an actor can be reduced to a label when projects stall, and that label can outlast the actual reasons for the stalling. The “jinx” tag is part superstition, part casting shorthand; when several projects collapse, the actor is often the easiest variable to blame, even if the real problems are financing, dates or scripts.

Balan’s Jailer 2 appearance is less a first step into Tamil cinema than a delayed correction. It shows what happens when a franchise is large enough to ignore an old caution.
