Star entourage costs hit ₹20 lakh a day, producers seek reset

Private chefs, trainers, security and body doubles can push a star's daily on-set cost to ₹20 lakh, pushing producers toward all-inclusive fees.

Star entourage costs reach ₹20 lakh a day

Hindi film producers are no longer just financing a film. On some productions they are financing a private wellness retreat: chefs, trainers, therapists, security and body doubles, all written into the lead actor’s contract before the first scene is shot.

The pressure is imported from Hollywood riders, but it is landing in an industry with very different margins. Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter India that above-the-line talent already consumes 20 to 25 per cent of a production budget. The wellness entourage sits on top of that fee.

The daily arithmetic

There is no fixed rate, and costs vary by film and budget. But the line items stack up quickly:

  • A private chef can charge ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 a day; the production must also rent a separate kitchen, pay for a second hotel room and buy specialised groceries.
  • A spot boy may charge ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 a day, personal security around ₹15,000, and a stylist ₹75,000 to more than ₹1 lakh.
  • A single vanity van costs about ₹50,000 a day, excluding the driver, food trucks and generators.

Once a big film agrees to every demand, the average cost of keeping a star on set reaches ₹20 lakh a day.

Where luxury overtakes technical need

The industry is not objecting to everything. A producer who has managed multi-starrers says action training and physical preparation are fair asks for a stunt-heavy role. The problem begins when a performer relies on a body double and still expects an elite physical team on the producer’s tab. The same logic extends to mental health therapists, physiotherapists and dedicated culinary staff: producers are being asked to fund specialists chosen by talent, often without a mutually agreed budget.

A veteran talent manager told the publication that the industry is trying to “engineer L.A. standards” in an ecosystem that lacks that margin right now. The result can be a logistics operation rather than a film set.

Stardom as a display of security

Why do actors hold so tightly to their entourages? Insiders point to volatile Fridays, shrinking pre-sale guarantees from streaming platforms, and competition with influencers. When an opening is not guaranteed, the entourage becomes visible proof of standing. A manager told THR India that actors are “decorating stardom through entourage size and power displays.”

There is also history. Years ago, producers cut corners on hair and make-up; talent built private teams to protect their look. The practice has now swung to the opposite extreme, and there is no guild or collective body to set limits.

The all-inclusive correction

Several production desks are pushing for a structural fix: quote one consolidated fee that covers personal staff, daily logistics and the entourage. If an actor is paid, say, ₹10 crore, their chef, trainer and therapist come from that same pool. The talent keeps autonomy; the production avoids open-ended overhead. The stakes are already visible: an actor recently lost a major show because her management demanded a large entourage package over and above her primary fee, and the platform walked away.

The broad view among producers is that on-set pampering cannot save a film whose economics do not work on Friday. A course correction is being discussed, and it starts at the negotiating table.
