Rajkummar Rao’s latest theatrical release Prahaar arrived in cinemas on October 16 with modest pre-release buzz but encouraging early reactions. Behind the opening-day conversation is a larger box-office question: how close is one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable actors to a rare cumulative milestone?
Trade figures compiled by Koimoi put Rao’s combined post-Covid Indian net collections at ₹888.58 crore across nine theatrical releases. The gap to the ₹1,000 crore mark is ₹111.42 crore.
Nine releases, one outsized hit
Rao’s post-Covid slate shows how varied his choices have been:
- Badhaai Do – ₹19.5 crore
- HIT: The First Case – ₹9.29 crore
- Bheed – ₹2 crore
- Srikanth – ₹49.5 crore
- Mr & Mrs Mahi – ₹35.14 crore
- Stree 2 – ₹627.5 crore
- Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video – ₹44.48 crore
- Bhool Chuk Maaf – ₹74.81 crore
- Maalik – ₹26.36 crore
Strip away Stree 2, and the remaining eight titles together add up to about ₹261 crore. That single blockbuster is why the cumulative conversation exists; the rest of the slate is a reminder that a mid-budget cinema run can be steady without being spectacular.
What Prahaar must do
Prahaar is not being positioned as an event film. Early trade reports note low pre-release buzz, but reactions after release have been positive. That matters in a theatrical market where word of mouth can extend a film’s run longer than an opening weekend suggests.
The competitive field also gives the film some room. Drishyam 3 will pull a section of the audience, but the other new releases are not expected to dent Prahaar significantly, according to Koimoi. For a legal drama, ₹111.42 crore is difficult rather than automatic; it will require the positive reaction to spread and hold.
Why the ₹1,000 crore mark matters
Cumulative actor totals are now a common way to evaluate post-pandemic box-office relevance. For Rao, the milestone would be more than a number: it would show that a performer known for mid-budget films can also be central to a large-scale commercial result without becoming a franchise-first star.
In an industry that often tracks the opening weekend first, the post-Covid cumulative lens is a longer view. It rewards a filmography rather than a single Friday. For an actor whose best work has often arrived in smaller films, that is the right measure.
