Movie Review:
‘Blurr’ has a strong beginning. After waking up from a nightmare, Gautami (Taapsee Pannu) is sure that her twin sister Gayatri is in imminent danger. A desperate race to a hilltop mansion results in horror. The sibling, who had a degenerative eye condition, passed away. And the distraught Gautami is now certain that her life is also being sought after.
Taapsee Pannu plays two characters in the official remake of the Spanish-language film “Julia’s Eyes,” which is directed by Guillem Morales and made by Guillermo del Toro. The plot points for a successful horror thriller quickly come together: the forested slopes are steep and dark; the house of the dead sister has a sinister staircase; a male neighbour who shares a home with a silent younger sister is appropriately shifty; a nearby older woman harbours a secret; and the cop who arrives to check on Gautami and her husband (Gulshan Devaiah) seems overconfident that nothing is wrong.
All is well thus far. Losing your sight, a condition that Gayatri experienced and now seems to be Gautami’s fate, is a terrifying thought in and of itself. It’s much more terrifying to see someone darting around at the fringe of your ever blurrier field of vision. Although the main lady has the most screen time, the characters, especially hers, come across as shady. What kind of a person was Gayatri, whose life and death had such an effect on her twin? the same or distinct? What else does Gautami’s husband do besides drive her from one place to another? Even the jump scares become predictable once a seemingly helpful character (Thapliyal, effective) begins to telegraph his blows.
The plot stretches out far too much too soon, the running time grows too long, and the film flattens—this is the problem with the majority of Bollywood thrillers.
