Varun Dhawan has done many rom-com, two to be precise with Alia Bhatt but his coming film Kalank is anything but rom-com. Alia and Varun are known for their fun chemistry in their films but their recent project pushed them as actors as it placed them in roles that are very different and challenging from their previous counterparts (Humpty Sharma Ki Dhulaniya and Badrinath Ki Dhulanya). Recently we sat down with Varun Dhawan to have a conversation with him about the movie – Kalnank and his Jodi with Alia Bhatt (Wondering what Ranbir must be thinking)
How was it working in a multi-starrer film?
Varun: It was very exciting to work on this project because the story itself was quite exciting. The casting was quite apt, and I think you will be able to see that in the film, the casting was done with a strong sense of purpose in mind because nobody else could have pulled off the role of Bal Raj Cudhri Like Sanjay Dutt and Bahar Begum like Madhuri Dixit did, it’s just so perfect.
Did you and Alia feel the pressure to make the film a hit?
Varun: It’s not like when I do a movie, I measure the cast but when I was doing Dilwale I didn’t feel much pressure because Shahrukh sir was there, but other than that I do feel the pressure.
What do you have to say about your Jodi with Alia in the film?
Alia and I have been all over the world for our films and their promotions, people are attached to the Jodi and that brings in a sense of responsibility on us. It was fun for us to do something different from Dhulaniya series and take these roles which challenge us as actors. Alia has been working since she was 17 and I since I was 23, as filmy Jodi we don’t want to be confined to a typical style of Jodi, we want to try out different challenging characters. So, when a decade down the line when people look at our Jodi, they will say that we have tried every type of romance.
The role of Zafar and Roop were first offered to SRK and Kajol do you think you both will be the next SRK and Kajal?
No, that’s quite a big comparison. Even now, when we talk about SRK and Kajol, it is a very prominent Jodi. They have done seven films together. They have given many hits as Jodi, perhaps that’s why they are so iconic. People make comparisons very quickly, they will compare Virat with Sachin and Sachin with Gawaskar; these things keep happening. I don’t think its fair comparisons like this.
There is an iconic bullfight in the trailer, how challenging was that for you?
It was quite technically challenging actually. I even got scolded by the director Abhishek about it quite often. There are a lot of technical aspects involved when shooting for VFX. There was a mechanism that I was wearing that was kind of pricking me; I had never seen a mechanism like that before, to be honest. The bullfight has gotten promoted so much that it feels like the audience will come to theatres to watch the bullfight, not the movie.
Have you signed Coolie No 1?
We have recently locked the script and dialogues. It will be a very performance-oriented film I think.
