Indian box office up 17% to Rs11,000 crore in nine months

India's nine-month box office reached Rs11,000 crore, up 17%, as small and mid-budget films across languages returned strong multiples.

Indian box office hits Rs11,000 crore in nine months

India’s theatrical business has moved back into growth after years of inertia. Cumulative box-office collection for January through September reached Rs11,000 crore, a 17% increase over the Rs9,409 crore recorded in the same period last year, according to Ormax Media data cited by The Economic Times.

The change is visible at the turnstile too. Footfalls rose 5% year on year to 378 million in the first half of 2026, after three years in which the number had either fallen or stayed flat.

The hits are getting smaller and wider

The most telling indicator this year is not a single blockbuster, but the range of films returning multiples on modest budgets. Malayalam film Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, made for Rs25 crore, collected Rs192 crore in India alone, the report said.

  • Small-budget devotional Hanuman Ansh and family drama Premada Oorali found audiences.
  • Mid-budget titles such as Awarapan 2, Mirzapur, DC and Irumudi worked commercially.
  • Big-budget franchise play Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge showed franchise value.

What producers are noticing

Producers interviewed by ET point to changing audience tastes. “Audiences have increasingly accepted stories which feel authentic,” said producer Anand Pandit.

Producer Sunir Khetrpal framed it as a move away from repetition. “Theatrical audience is coming in for newer experiences and rejecting ‘sameness’,” he said, adding that viewers “are gradually but definitely becoming agnostic about genres, language or star status.”

Regional makers are also sequencing releases differently: first win the home territory, then let word-of-mouth and social media carry the film to other states. Producer and business expert Girish Johar said emotional connection is the common thread in most theatrical successes across languages in 2026.

Hollywood’s share is climbing

The same pattern is visible in Hollywood titles. Obsession, Michael and The Odyssey have succeeded in India across scales and genres. Distributor Shaaminder Malik credited social platforms—Instagram, YouTube, shorts and Reddit forums—for building Indian audiences for Hollywood films.

Trade analysts expect the final quarter to push totals higher, with Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three, and Hindi films The Ramayana and King on the calendar. Hollywood’s contribution to India’s box office could rise to 20–21% from a historical average of 15%.

For Hindi cinema, the implication is clear: theatrical success in 2026 is being decided by story and social proof as much as by scale.
