Imran Khan detained at Mumbai protest; FIR registered

The Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na actor was held at a Mumbai demonstration and released; an FIR now shadows his planned return in Adhure Hum Adhure Tum.

Imran Khan detained, FIR filed after Mumbai protest

Mumbai: Imran Khan’s return to the headlines is not the film announcement many fans had been expecting. The actor was detained on 10 October during a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan, released the same night, and now faces an FIR in connection with the gathering.

What happened at the protest

Khan was accompanied by his girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayn Marie Khan. Mumbai Police later said the gathering did not have the required permission. After their release, Washington shared videos on social media alleging that police prevented the group from leaving the area and booking a cab.

On 11 October, police registered an FIR against Khan under Sections 223 and 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The legal process is now the immediate storyline, even as the reason for the protest itself remains secondary to the public image of the actor’s return.

The pause after Katti Batti

Khan was introduced to Hindi cinema as a lead in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008), a romantic comedy directed by Abbas Tyrewala and produced by Aamir Khan. The role of Jai Singh Rathore, opposite Genelia D’Souza, gave him a durable boy-next-door identity. He followed it with a run of commercial releases including Kidnap, Luck, I Hate Luv Storys, Break Ke Baad, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and the sharper comedy Delhi Belly.

A short arc of the career explains why the break registered:

  • Defining roles: Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys, Break Ke Baad, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.
  • Comic turn: Delhi Belly, with Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur.
  • Last major lead: Katti Batti (2015), opposite Kangana Ranaut.

In later interviews, Khan said he had begun questioning whether box-office performance should be the main measure of his work. That dissatisfaction, combined with the response to his films, led him to step back rather than continue at the same pace.

Why this return is different

Khan has since spoken about how becoming a father to his daughter Imara shifted his priorities. In a 2024 interview, he described a difficult personal phase and said he chose to focus on health and well-being instead of maintaining a Bollywood position. Financial stability from his earlier career, he said, gave him the room to reconsider.

Now he is preparing Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, his first announced lead return after nearly a decade away. In an interview with The Indian Express, he called the comeback “a natural progression” and said experiences including his divorce had shaped him.

For an audience that remembers him as a romantic-comedy star, the detention changes the texture of that second act. The relevant question is no longer only whether he can reclaim his place; it is whether a legal headline will travel alongside the film’s promotion.

The detention does not automatically change the professional plan, but it alters the frame. Publicity for a comeback usually begins with posters or an announcement; here, the first images are from a police action. Whether that fades or lingers will depend as much on the legal case as on the film’s own momentum.
