The Lake House is a 2006 Hollywood fantasy romance drama movie directed by Alejandro Agresti and written by David Auburn. It stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, who last worked together in the 1994 action thriller Speed. It is a remake of the South Korean film Il Mare (2000).
The story follows an architect (Reeves) who lives in 2004 and a doctor (Bullock) who meet through letters left in the mailbox of a lake cottage where they both lived at different times. They maintain a two-year correspondence despite the fact that they are separated by time.
Alex Wyler, a lonely architect in Chicago, has a tense relationship with his father, Simon Wyler. In 2004, he buys an old glasshouse by a lake that his father designed and built, and discovers a message in his mailbox from the previous tenant, the also-lonely Dr. Kate Forster, asking the new owner to transport her correspondence to a downtown address.
Alex joins his brother Henry in Chicago, and when they go to the address on Dr. Forster’s email, they discover a luxurious apartment building under construction that will be completed in 18 months. Alex and Kate realize that she is in 2006 and Alex is in 2004 after exchanging messages. They fall in love and try to figure out how to get together in person.
Production began in March 2005 and was filmed and set in Chicago. The lake home was constructed on Maple Lake, which is located within the Maple Lake Forest Preserve off of 95th Street in Willow Springs, a southwest Chicago neighborhood. The home was erected on dry land, then flooded to make it appear as though it were in the lake. After filming, the home had to be demolished and replaced with a modest fishing dock.
On June 20, 2006, Lakeshore Records in the United States published a digital and physical version of an original motion picture soundtrack comprising songs from the film as well as a selection of original music cues composed and produced by Rachel Portman.
