17 David Dhawan films, a mortgage and Govinda’s comeback

Govinda's 1990s stardom gave way to a mortgaged house, a career slowdown and a comeback built on Bhagam Bhag, Salaam-e-Ishq and Partner.

17 David Dhawan films, a mortgage and Govinda's comeback

Rajpal Yadav’s long-running cheque-bounce case has moved forward after the Supreme Court accepted his proposal to sell ancestral property to clear dues linked to the 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, noting arrangements for an immediate payment of ₹2 crore. The relief is specific, but the case points to a familiar pattern in Hindi cinema: public success and private financial strain can sit side by side.

The fall after the 1990s peak

Govinda’s manager, Shashi Sinha, said in February 2026 that the actor once came close to serious financial trouble, though he was not bankrupt. Govinda withdrew money from a fixed deposit, added more of his own funds and used it to help other people. When the burden became difficult to manage, he mortgaged his house.

Sinha said Govinda took on events and performances to repay the loan, and dismissed reports that the actor currently faces bankruptcy. The debt, he maintained, had been cleared.

The episode is striking because Govinda was once among Hindi cinema’s most bankable stars. In the 1990s, films such as Shola Aur Shabnam, Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Saajan Chale Sasural and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan made him a leading comic and dance star, and he was considered real competition for the three Khans.

A slowdown, a rift and a route back

The cash squeeze arrived when his film career had slowed. In a 2007 interview, Govinda said his films were not working and exciting offers had dried up. He entered politics in 2004, won the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat, and later returned to films.

His defining collaboration was with David Dhawan: 17 films together produced several major hits. That partnership turned bitter after disagreements over a scene in Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, and Govinda later said Dhawan suggested he accept smaller roles when he tried to repair the friendship. The two eventually reconciled at Ramesh Taurani’s Diwali party in 2024.

Govinda’s comeback had a support system:

  • Bhagam Bhag: Govinda asked Suniel Shetty for work, and Shetty gave up the role of Babla for him; the Priyadarshan film paired him with Akshay Kumar.
  • Salaam-e-Ishq: The 2007 ensemble kept him visible during the return.
  • Partner (2007): Salman Khan and David Dhawan helped Govinda back into a mainstream hit.

₹100 crore still out of reach

Govinda claims around ₹100 crore is stuck in completed films that never got a proper release, alleging that sections of the industry worked against him. He is reportedly preparing another comeback, with names such as Battle of Galwan and a possible Partner 2 mentioned, though neither is confirmed.

The manager’s account is careful about endings: the loan was repaid, and the actor was not bankrupt. But the mortgage remains a useful caution for an industry that often equates fame with security.
